Maui Babe: We Shall Return

Due to the exorbitant price of hotels on Maui, we knew we’d be able to stay longer and skate more if we camped, so we made reservations at Camp Olowalu—$10 per night per tent. Perfect! For those who didn’t have quality Poler supplies, Walmart became the retailer of choice for camping gear. Walmart doesn’t have the highest-quality goods, but it had to do. What Walmart does have is a no-questions-asked return policy, which immediately came in handy when Navarrette realized that his one-man tent was more suited for a child than a lanky man with arms long enough to stretch the channel of a vert ramp in classic style. So, after one night of sleeping like a cannonball, Navs exchanged his tent for something more comfortable. It seemed like we went to Walmart every day to either buy or return something. But the real test came on the last day, when Preston Harper packed up his soaking-wet tent, equally soaked foam mattress and sleeping bag, and proudly marched up to the counter.
“Um, yeah—this tent leaked, and now my sleeping bag and mattress are ruined. I’m pretty much over camping after last night.”
A full refund was issued, and Harper now had close to $60 in his pocket. But that wasn’t the end of the road for him. While the rest of our flights departed at noon, Preston’s wasn’t leaving ’til 11:00 pm. We awoke the next morning to the following text:
“While you guys were flying home, I walked to the movie theater, snuck in and watched two movies, then got caught in a downpour on my walk back to the airport. I bought a 40 at the gas station and drank it at the bus stop and waited for the rain to slow down. It truly was my day!”
