Title: Detroit DIY: Brewster-Douglass Projects Tennis Courts
Post by: Mark Whitefoot on February 14, 2012, 05:05:35 AM
I recently checked this spot out, and it's ripe for being turned into a skatepark. Smooth ground (easily reparable cracks), 8 perfect cement benches flanking the courts, open space where tennis was probably hardly ever actually played. I'm planning to go out and clear the courts of debris and pull the weeds from the cracks on the next decent weather day. I've got cash for building materials, but I need help with two things: 1) someone with experience working with cement, and 2) strength in numbers to ward off potentially dangerous crackheads who infest the adjacent abandoned project buildings. Will post pics after initial cleanup.

Tennis courts in the PJ's? I guess if it worked in Compton, Los Angeles

Working with concrete is really kinda like playing in mud, so have fun. Start small then move up.

I don't think there are any regulars on this forum that are in Detroit so you probably wont get any man power from here.

There are some great builders here though that might be able to help and I might be able to help too.

So update as much as you like and let us see the progress

damn...... detroit, huh?

given your need for protection from detroit crackheads, you might wanna contact a community improvement organization to assist you. there's groups of ex-gangbangers trying to pay their karmic debts that can help you out...let them know what you wanna do, and sprinkle the conversation with words like "stewardship" "community building" "empowerment" and "self-sustaining"

start with a cinderblock ledge or small flat bank to learn a bit. concrete isn't rocket science.

get some.
