Title: Salamander Ranch
Post by: Salamander on February 20, 2012, 11:33:19 AM
This project began June 2010. I had rolled my ankle and decided what better time to start building in this spot out in the backyard. I started with a wooden bank that had angle iron on top, I really had no plans for concrete at that time.

But the walls were too perfect and clearly needed a wallride. I had never mixed concrete so I had no clue what I was doing, but it still came out ok.

Wood does not last long being outside and living in the hills, the weather just eats it up. So once I realized concrete would last much longer and much less maintenance than wood "it was on".
Started bringing in loads of busted up concrete for filler and figuring out where to put a quarter.

Around the same time I decided the angle iron on the bank needed to get pool coping and the bank needed a bit of tranny.

After many loads of broken concrete it was time to start learning what I was doing when it came to mixing concrete, it wasn't perfect but it's skateable and is now still my favorite quarter to skate here.

The rain was starting to take a toll on the wood bank and I knew I would still want a bank to skate so I came up with this thing.

And a few weeks later added this quarter.

Another few weeks went by and then this.

Which eventually turned into this.

By the end of December 2010 this it what the spot looked like, and it sat for nearly 9 months with no additions.

Around this time I guess I did not know that I wanted to build this any further. It seemed that it was a good fun little skate spot in the backyard to bring all the buddy's home after skating a few parks, but I knew I wanted to add more, just was not sure.
Also, up to this point I had mixed everthing in a wheel barrow and buying concrete by the pallet. This is not the funnest method and was a huge deal trying to get buddy's to help mix. Basically a pain in the ass for that amount of concrete.
This last October 2011 I ran into a buddy at the Pink Motel pool party I hadn't seen in about 4-5 years and we got to talking about the backyard spot. He seemed down to help and mentioned he had a concrete mixer and a jackhammer along with some knwledge of building a few skate obstacles, and that is when this really started taking form as to what it is now.
After 9 months of no building and a weekend of breaking down an existing wall and spending some time building this form the first pour using a mixer came out better than I could've imagined
(http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e384/ericmpeters/IMG_0809.jpg)

I had to fill in the gap betwween quarter and bank so I got this crazy idea, which came out better than I had planned.
Also, cut up the bottom of the transitions to add rebar so I did'nt keep having to patch it up everytime it rained (This should have been done this way from the beggining, but what did I know at the time).

We bounced around a few ideas and decided we needed to extend the tombstone quarter since we were thinking about adding a doorway. Also decided to fix this side during the process as well.

And then we decided to pour despite the rain.........not recomended and will never do this again since we were left standing in the rain more than 12 hours.

I knew I would eventually have to start building a block wall to meet the transitions with after the doorway but got all hyped on buidling the doorway, so it began.

Then I started thinking about the weight of the doorway once the rebar and concrete was added, so I built a footer for it to sit on.

It was awesome pulling the form apart and seeing this.

Now it was time to start building that block wall so we had to dig a 3' trench (by hand) to pour the footer with rebar.

Limited to only working on the weekends it took over a month to build this wall.

Thanks man. I have been wanting to put this in it's own place for a while. It'll be a lot easier to see the progress and I wanted to add the story behind it since it has been on going for over a year and a half. Put's it into better perspective.

And then it was finally time to pour the doorway tranny.

Which left the backside of all this looking pretty wierd. It needed to be shaped up so it didn't look like some sort of prehistoric castle. So we built a huge form to pour a deck and wall.

With coping mounted all we needed to do is fill in the space behind it. This ended up taking us 80 bags of concrete.
But it now has a nice deck and pretty cool looking wall in the back.

We then used the wood from the wall form to build the next quarter form and that is where we are at now. The quarter of technology I guess.

Those instagram pics look amazing man. Glad you made it out and got to see a little peice of the puzzle get put together. Just have to keep it at controlled sessions (invite or let me know you're coming), can't have bargers showing up trying to session when I'm not home ya know.
Hope to see ya for the next pour.

I can completely understand not wanting people to come over and barge your house.

I just tell people that your place is a long drive to the middle of no where and that I've been sworn to secrecy. If they're bummed on that then they can suck it. If I get some heavy hitters asking to skate your place then I'll tell them I'll ask you if it's cool (on the weekend of course).

I might be able to make it up on the 26th but the 3rd and 4th might be better for me. I'll text you

Hahahahaha that one had me laughing good. I kept pulling the phone out of the fax machine on one side yesterday...... "hello"!!!!

Thanks Pat, everybody's been coming to help every weekend and it is starting to really payoff. That last quarter took 38 bags of 90# quikrete and 2 bags of portland. I mix about 1 shovel of portland per bag. The quarter is 6' high and 6' wide.

Good job Salamander wish I could have been there but I've got my stuff to handle. Hopefully I'll be done dealing with my house to get back in time for one of the corner sections.

When I was there in person it looked like you could do the corner in 2 sections to make your life easier. Did Kyle change his feelings on that? Looking at it now I'm so scared, I'd do it in 3 sections hahaha

Damn I'm tired, was a good weekend. A lot of work and beer guzzling went down.
Was busy and didn't remember to take before shots. This was before we added the wire mesh to the rebar.

For our first big radius pour I couldn't be more happy with the outcome.

The bank wall is about 6' high, I can't remember exactly but I think I used about 2 1/2' - 3' tranny. So there's about 3 1/2' - 4' of flat bank (but steep) It's hard to say because I did the form by hand with no measurements. Probably not the best way but it worked.

Come on up in a few weeks, hit me up and let me know when you plan on coming.
Next on the list is a deck that wraps around the top of the corner, then I gotta plant some bushes on the backside of the wall. Then we can move onto the other side, it seems like neverending work but we are slowly getting there.

Been a while since I posted any updates........
Trying to hit the door from the right side was a bit tough so I poured a temporary slab for easier access.

Built the deck form.

No worries Krusher, super hyped on how that pic came out. We are grinding away at it still every Saturday. On to the left side of the wall ride this weekend. We are hoping to be completely done by late June.

The new wall ride is a lot of fun and gives you a ton of speed for new lines so we decided it would be better to expand it 3' more. Also poured the deck for the new quarter expansion and added a little wall ride sculpture up top in the corner.

Sounds good Krusher. We will be working on the deck of that new pour this Saturday. Then taking the next two weekends off, got a camping/skating trip coming up. Only one more section and it'll be done!!!

Thanks Rob, it's been a blast to skate lately.
The work has slowed down lately but we should be done with it all by September. Got a 10 day road trip coming up in 3 weeks. Not much new progress pics to report but here's how the wall is sitting now.

Did a large 1" crack repair. Old existing concrete had a crack that I got sick of patching up all the time. Had to cut, jackhammer, tie in new rebar and pour.

so sick guys.  very inspirational.  my wife asked if you guys needed to get a permit and i said you guys were in the US.  i'm going to build next spring and was going to inquire up here.  and since the city probably wont allow a skatepark, i was going to have the permit be for a "decorative poured patio".  then it's city approved  ;)

"Concrete yard art" does not need a permit haha.

P.S. Who said anything about skateboarding?

I got shut down for not having a permit. The city wanted me to get a permit for a swimming pool. They did not care what I called it. Very intelligent city employee younger than me says: "Boy, you dug a hole in the ground and now your dumpin concrete in it. That's a damn swimmin pool." Set us back 4 very hot months (which was great) and cost $50. $20 of it was processing fees. I wrote skate ramp on everything so it's not a swimming pool, and I won't pay taxes on increased property values for having a swimming pool.

Having that permit has actually saved my bowl from a nosey bitch ass neighbor. She kept calling the city to come tear out my illegal skatepark. The city denied her request saying they approved the project and it's a legal skate ramp.

That's awesome the city approved and the neighbor can't do shit. One of the main reason's this build has been all above ground.

It is kinda tight but not too tight, the perfect little radius. When we connect the next section it will open it up more.

I actually have a local pool coping supply yard that I buy the coping from. It's cheap and has cured a lot longer than if I were to make the coping myself.

If you ever make it out to Florida hit me up man, and if I get a chance to come back to Cali anytime soon I would love to check this out. Again, fantastic work!

Thanks for the comments dudes!
Was a lot of hard work and many Saturdays. Definately learned a lot about building over the time spent on this project and never could've been what it is without all the hard work from everybody that showed up and put in time.
Dan I will hit you up for sure if I ever venture down to Florida.
Glad I could share the process with everyone here.
Cheers!
