Title: Give me some suggestions on new skate shoes...
Post by: outsider716 on September 22, 2012, 09:16:07 AM
I'm looking for some new skate shoes...Give me some suggestions.

1. I usually skate in Etnies, but recently they stopped making the ones that I like and I haven't found any new ones by them that appeal to me.

2. I prefer low tops (I would consider a half-cab style) in leather/suede with a decent amount of padding in the tongue/around the ankles.

3. They need to be durable as fuck!!!

4. I'm not rich so Nikes are pretty much out of the question...I just can't fathom spending $90-$100 on a pair of sneakers that I'm going to destroy in a month or two. $40-$60 is more in my price range.

Tell me why you like the ones you're recommending and why I should consider giving them a shot...

I would definitely say go with either Airwalk 600 Prototypes

or the unstoppable d3

in my opinion, there is no such thing as a good quality, long lasting shoe that fits all of your requirements.  i spent years trying out every combination of shit that works and doesn't work for me.  what i've found is that the ones i can get a deal on are the ones for me.  right now it's vans.  they have sample sales around here every few months and guess what. i'm size 9 so i usually get 4 pairs for $100.  my TNT5's were destroyed in 3 sessions, or about 8 hours for those ones lol!  i find it all comes down to what and how you are skating at that time.

or what mucklebutt said.  those are classics.

Ok in all seriousness I completely agree with dtotherob. Every shoe I've skated has fallen apart eventually. I rarely see a reason to spend a lot of money on skate shoes. Some last longer than others, but all will be shredded. I keep a "nicer pair" for everyday shit until my beater skate shoes are no longer even skatable. Then the nicer shoes become the beaters...and so goes the last 20 years of my life. All that being said, my favorite pair of skate shoes since the Half Cab have been the AV Eras (I've had multiple pairs).

They're super comfy, look good, take a beating, and are still thin enough to not lose board feel (e.g. the Globe CT4s I pushed around in 10 or so years ago).

I'll probably get AVE's new ones too because they look rad as shit (basically just the old Sk8 Low), but hopefully will be more durable like the AV Eras.

That's all I got.

Thanks for the input guys...I do realize that no shoes are indestructible, but some can take a little more of a beating and last a little longer...

I usually shoe goo the fuck out my skate sneakers when they start getting holes in them to get maximum life out them too, but that only goes so far so long hahaha...

I found these and got hyped on them...

But of course, they're an older model and out of stock everywhere...The few remaining pairs I hunted down weren't even close to my size... >:( Guess I'll keep on looking.

I ended up getting a pair of Fallens today...I have a pair already which are my every day basic wearing around shoes...I can't say for sure how well they hold up for skating. We'll see I guess.

you gotta think about your top price you'd pay, and go from there.  i would hate it, but i'd say i might blow $80 on a pair of skate shoes that i would expect to last 2 months. (2 months might consist of skating on the weekend, 4 hours a day so basically i get 16 sessions out of a pair of shoes.  ouch.  that's almost $500 a year for 6 pairs of shoes.)

now i don't have a problem paying $40 each for 2 pairs of shoes of lesser quality knowing that i'll only get a month out of each pair.  still the same cost but i'll justify it as being worth it because i don't have rags on my feet for the last 2 weeks.

for me, the sample sales are great.  i get 20 pairs for $500 a year and i have a huge shoe selection lol!

Shoes that have lasted, and skated well: Vans Ripsaws, Rowleys, Old schools. Dekline Archer.

Shoes that lasted the longest: Element.

Shoes that wore out ridiculously fast: TNT5s in 3 sessions. Vox Troopers, which I wore through both soles in 1 day.

i thought the TNT5's were shit.  i only got 3 sessions on mine as well.

my osiris high tops seem to be holding up good and they're nice and plush around the ankle.

I've skated in my Fallens 2x so far and they seem pretty solid. The soles feel a little thin, but they're holding up so far.

You're all going to hate me for this one, but the one shoe I've found to be most durable and skateable is the Nike SB Janoski. I've had a bunch of pairs and they always last me quite a while. I know 75 dollars is a bit to spend on a shoe to destroy, but I've never had a problem finding them on sale. I've gotten a few pairs in the 40-50 dollar range. I've always liked vans but every pair I've had never lasted more than a few good sessions. But hey, what do I know I'm just some dumb young whippersnapper.  :-[

FUCK NIKE! Almost anything by Emerica or Circa is good. Cant go wrong with Lakai. Fallens are okay, just steal some insoles out of some Emericas to throw in there, as Fallen insoles are thin like cardboard.

Can't go wrong with Lakai? You sure can. Had a pair blow up - rip along the edge of the sole, one of them toe to heel, after 2 or 3 days.

Lately my favorite is Dekline.

shoe companies make money off us because they know we scrape them on sand paper all day.  it's not a prudent business decision to have your shoes last all year because you would go out of business.  i think based on that, shoes are made for comfort and looks as they can not determine how long said product will last for everyone.
