Title: What boards do you ride and why do you like them?
Post by: Nick Nykiforuk on May 07, 2013, 04:52:31 AM
Hey guys i don't want this to look like some thread for kids to just brag about there setups. I work at West 49 (dont judge) and im the only dude there that knows skate to an extent. what i want to know is what kind of boards people are riding. Brand and even size of equipment you use and what you like and dislike about them so i can spread the knowledge to my coworkers so i dont have to watch them fumble around acting like idiots while trying to sell a kid there first skateboard. For example i try and only ride REAL decks for there bigger boxier noses and tails and how concave they are in an 8.38 with indy 149's for there response and reliability and bones stf for there speed and there ability to not flatspot! so let me know whatcha got so i can educate my coworkers so we can benefit the youngins that come into the store!

West 49? Must be a West Coast thing. I ain't judging. We gotta do what we gotta do to get by.

I just won a Habitat in a Raffle a week ago. I have yet to grip and rip. However, I believe you cannot go wrong with any board from Deluxe. Good Wood, good Shapes. I am slowly turning away from the Popsicle Stick shapes and skating funky shapes,  ( the Habitat Board I have is essentially the Grosso shape). I kinda hate Element decks, and $lave decks. Anything with gimmicky or weed graphics sucks. Don't give a kid a board with a Pot Leaf on it. No gimmicks either. Skateboarding was doing just fine until people realized the only way they can do tricks is if the board is filled with Fiberglass or Helium.

For trucks, I reccomend Independent. I've been skating them for several years and I would not skate anything else. Just match up the sizes (129,139,149 etc.) to the size of the board. Smaller mm for smaller boards. Raw silver colored trucks are cheaper and are the SAME EXACT TRUCKS as the painted ones. Don't buy into that shit.

For Wheels, I am less selective. I usually ride Spitfire, but the reemergence of OJ into the market has steered me towards them. I've never really had a problem with flatspots. I usually skate 55mm+ wheels because they allow for speed, but they also have a large riding surface. A good, all-around size for first timers would be anything from 52mm - 54mm. The only wheels I cannot really stand are wheels made by deck companies.

Bearings are bearings. I usually skate Independent ABEC-5's. I have no idea what is so illustrious about the ABEC-7's. Can't go wrong with Bones Reds. Cheap bearings work just as well as the $100 Bones Swiss Ceramics.

Griptape is difference. I used to like MOB but then it got all gimmicky with logos and shit all over it. It feels like I am skating a NASCAR instead of a skateboard. I use Alchemy, but you won't get it in stores. Check out AlchemyGrip.com. If you can't wait for it, I suggest a sheet of Jessup in Solid Black. Can't go wrong.

The way I see it, if it is a Kids first board, do not overload them with gimmicks and shit they don't need. To me, a first board should be something that a kid can mess around on and get a feel for skateboarding. I hope this helps steer them in the right direction.

^ thanks buddy i appreciate the positive feedback, i think this is the first forum where not everybody is at each others neck. i deffinately agree with you about the griptape. we usualy get stocked with jessup and the company started bringing in mob grip. the only advantage of mob is that its thicker and more gritty which will be good for new timers. if any expierenced skater comes in its only jessup hands down, the glue is alot stronger and since its a thinner grip it allows for exceptional fit, doesnt peel, and doesnt ruin your shoes. Also with the bearings can anyone actually explain what the "abec means?" all i know is the lower the abec the stronger but slower the bearing. i personally skated shake junt 7's, they lasted 2 weeks. i bought abec 5's because thats all we got and it was the best longest lasting bearing ive ridden.

I would also like to know peoples opinions on constructions of boards? like elements feather light, plan b's pro light, p2 and normal 7 and 8 ply decks.

west49 is a mall store that i hate lol!  basically the reason Skaters shut it's doors after 25 years so i couldn't care less about them.  fuck them but i agree, you gotta pay the bills.

abec rating is a tolerance and rating scale for bearings.  i could type out my version but here's WIKI's instead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABEC_scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABEC_scale)

ultimately a bearing is only going to last as long as you choose to take care of them, or leave them.  precision is great and all but we subject our shit to all sorts of torsional loads and angles that it really doesn't matter.

Gimmick boards don't do dick. Nothing's wrong with a standard 7-ply deck.

Wow, bummer that skaters closed. I went there a few times in 2007 and bought some white indies with Reynolds name on them. I must have bought a board there another time because I remember breaking one before a circa demo. I think the Internet shops are worse killers than mall shops though.

If I worked at a shop I would recommend to a new skateboarder an 8 inch board and recommend they choose whichever graphic they like because it won't really matter. I personally like habitat boards largely because of graphics. My second choice often is something from DLX. Reds and jessup, and besides indys I like ace and thunder. Bones or spit for wheels

yeah i dunno i had a libtech slick permapop back around 2000 that was pretty cool. don't make em anymore, but it had the most amazing shape. the element feather lights around the same time were pretty cool too.

for OP's question i skate mostly blanks from blankdecks.com or powell peralta for the graphix. wheels i like 50-51 blanks again. cost me 4 bucks a set off ebay usually. but i hear rictas are good.  trucks i like most anything other then grindking reverse kingpins cuz they come loose kinda quick. i like destructo the most and they're guaranteed 4 life and have super hard bushings.  bearings bones reds i like a lot. grip; i had some blanks that came with a softer grip that didn't eat my shoes up too quick but it's not too sticky. i like jessup. mounting hardware whatevers cheapest.

decks i've liked:
powell
vision
blankdecks.com
eastbilt.com blanks
popwars
element 15 years ago (haven't heard much good recently, but i'm sure they're prob still ok)
consolidated
dex
libtech
some shop boards from shops that closed here and there
CCS blanks
black label
baker (15 years ago when it was still birdhouse affiliated, dunno how things are now)

decks i haven't liked as much:
Almost, shits crap and broke in a day
the new Libtechs don't have as much pop as the old ones
some Chinese blanks off ebay broke in a day, some lasted months
CCS blank slick didn't have much pop, doesn't look like they still make em anyway, did last a while tho

do kids realize that there are only a handful of board makers that supply to tons of companies who put their own graphics on them?  it then comes down to graphic choice and board manufacturer as opposed to which company you like to support.  i prefer dlx wood to say, chinese wood.  once you've established that, choices are endless.

also, a board will only hold up for as long as you  skate it, and depending on what you skate, and how hard you push.  ie:  i can try 1000 pressure flips on a new board and it's garbage, even though i didn't jump down anything. i can also snap a board on the first drop.  outside contributing factors are what leads to board wear, not the initial product.  i might have a hell of a time breaking a walmart board compared to an antihero board.  is it because of the material? shape? concave? or just the fact that i can make the pro board do what i want, easier than the walmart log.

For a beginner, occasional skater, I'll agree, go with cheap bearings.  That said, Swiss and Swiss Ceramics are so much better than Reds! Significantly faster, smoother and last WAY longer if you routinely clean them.  My last set of normal swiss lasted three years before I gave them away and my current swiss ceramics have been going strong since 2009. Depending on how often you buy Reds, you can save money in the long run with swiss AND have a smoother, faster ride. Im hoping my ceramics last 10 years before they break.

OH, and keep those shields on kiddies!

how often are you cleaning them?  see for me, if i take my wheels off and take the bearings out, i'll probably be putting new ones in.  usually i replace my bearings and wheels at the same time and i will replace the occasional bearing during a set of wheel ownership.  i go through maybe 2-3 sets a year. maybe 4 sets of bearings then, if you count the ok ones i've swapped in when one's failed.  yes, i hoard good used bearings.  i'm not a candidate for swiss because i won't maintain them.  reds are much cheaper 3 times a year than 3 sets of swiss lol. i know this about myself so i don't bother trying to switch.

up here with the long winters though, a set up will last me 6 months with just mini ramp skating but in the summer i always make up for it by destroying my gear.   i can manage 2-3 sessions a week and right now i'm on my 4th board since the end of may.

I used to only clean them when they got crusty and screechy (when you spin it by hand and it barely spins). That was probably once a year or maybe twice if my board accidentally went through a puddle. But now that I use ceramics, I'm more proactive, about 3 times a year. Haha its definitely overkill but I've actually grown to enjoy the ritual, kinda like changing the oil on my car. Plus, I love the smooth rolling feel.

It's crazy, when I first got the ceramics, my board went through two puddles in the same month and I never got around to cleaning them and two of the wheels were practically seized. I was bummed because I thought my nice expensive bearings were ruined! Finally cleaned them and they came back just like new :) Rob, you should consider them the next time you need bearings, you're a DIY guy, it'd be a piece of cake for you to clean. Also, no need to spring for ceramics, the other bones Swiss are just as good. Equally as fast but the ceramics are a bit smoother and longer lasting due to tighter clearances and nitrade coated ceramic balls (the instruction manual even mentions that the standard swiss needs 2 drops of speed cream compared to 1 for the ceramics).

I own a Toy Machine and an Alien Workshop. The Toy Machine is really light and has amazing pop. The Alien Workshop board is really heavy and doing flip tricks is really hard unless you flick with all you've got. Maybe I just haven't ''broke it in'' yet, so to speak

Baker and Deathwish because I like the shape/size/concave and they have the best teams so I like to support them.

Right now I'm riding an 8.2 Creature Evilive Deck with 139 Indy's and some 54 Ricta Speedrings.

I always rode REAL decks but wanted to try out a Creature, and it has been killer for me. I will probably get another one. Just such a solid board. The REALs are still amazing and I would totally recommend them!! I'd love to try out a Baker/Deathwish, Toy Machine, Powell or even a Roger deck.

Indy's. There is just no other way. They are so simple yet so perfect. I won't bash any other truck companies though because I would honestly like to try out a set of Thunders. Also... I've always ridden the 139's but would like to try out the 149s. If anyone has any input, lemme know!

I won the Ricta wheels from a free giveaway on Facebook and I've actually been really satisfied with them! They just feel so solid. But, I am typically a Bones guy. Just love the way they feel.

Mob grip... Reds (cheap)... and I have no idea what kind of hardware. I'm probably still using my first set since I just re-use them.

Wheels wise I used to have a really bad set of no logos.
Found I just kept slamming cos they were hard as nails and even small stones stopped them.

Went with Bones 60mm and have never looked back, nothing stops those badboys, like monster truck wheels.

urban and park?  longboard?  it's street and wrongboarding.  you only get to pick one.  the correct one gives access to parks and ramps, the other is wrong.

I was at the UBC park, the whole campus is infested, and some longboarder just came cruising in, snaked me and just kept going through the other end of the park. I suppressed the urge to push him out of my way, but it wasn't easy.

Furthermore, they keep crashing into cars and killing themselves in North Van and I think they are banning ALL skating outside parks?

Title: Re: What boards do you ride and why do you like them?
Post by: dtotherob on October 10, 2013, 05:00:22 PM
that's shitty.  i heard about a possible ban and i think regular skaters should stand up and be recognized for not contrubuting to that.

i was at UBC sunday and it wasn't too bad.  got there around 10am.  there was an older coffee crew, which was cool.  a little bit later it was idiot parents and their kids on scooters and bikes.  with training wheels.  they seem to think that when the skating stops, that we are being curtious.  haha, it's because we don't want to kill your kid and we are just waiting to see which guys caves first, and tells them off.  it's a pretty fun park, but more than 10 guys at a time, no thanks.  got a few clips while i was there though.   too bad we didn't get a chance to skate together.

It is shitty, it doesn't affect me because I never skate in North Van, but it's a double bummer. I don't like kids dying, even if it's their own fault and I don't like it affecting people who have nothing to do with it.

Good news: their seems to be another park coming and maybe it will be indoor or have a roof.

I love the UBC park. It's so nice for a relaxed session, and I started my masters there, so I get to skate with a few cool people a few times a week. I always skate anywhere early now to avoid other humans. I skated the plaza at 9 this morning and had it all to myself.

We'll skate some time!

Um... I like my krooked board because it is the best, longest lasting, board I've ever had!

Right now I'm riding a Powell and Peralta Kilian II with the ends squared off like an old school freestyle board. I'm liking it. When I was skating in the late 80s/early 90s I kind of had a phobia about them since that is what most of the jocks/preps that took up skating skated.
