Title: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: elastic back on January 21, 2009, 11:04:34 AM
i have made (or helped make) a lot of spots over the years, but i don't have photos of a lot of them. here is one i made with my friend scottie in queens, nyc. it took a couple trips and 10 bags:

also, please only post photos of public spots you have made. we don't need to see your box or miniramp in your backyard (save that for another thread).

some fuckin kids broke this one, so we made another one. we also built a flat bar and a small concrete quarter pipe with parking block coping in the same lot, both were removed by the city.

i dunno about that... i say post up whatever you wanna post. for example, zarosh's deal is on private land, and i wouldn't exclude that from here... and there's TON of backyard 'crete going up all over.

as far as i'm concerned, any DIY is good DIY. miniramps, weird backyard contraptions, etc.... i wanna see it all.

i meant to put it in another thread. i am totally down for home spots, but i meant this one specifically for public ones.

Several days of taking trips to drop off crete and forms.    A couple hours of fill and whatever BS I could find for "rebar".    16 bags of the cheap stuff and two bags of Portland.    All by myself.......for a homie that killed himself.

Its about 8 feet wide seeing how I used an 8 foot 2x4 inside on the frame.   I'd say the transistions are about 3 and a 1/2 or 4 feet.

I already posted this in bailgun's marginal way beniefit thread, but thought I should re-post it here.  This is the mini-park we're continually building at my friend's shop, called Chill Out, in Tahara, Aichi, Japan.

The mini bowl, with new bump and colors

3.5 x 10 ft mini

The beginnings of connecting the bowl roll-in to a flat area in the middle.  This is just after the typhoon, hence the crap all over the place...  Where my board is at the top right is now the location of the moonbank.  So you can hit the moon bank, and roll into the bowl.

Panning to the left from the moon bank location. At the far end in front of the building is the concrete block wall and barbecue.  What you can't see is the fire pit in the middle, which going to be built up to look like, and will be painted to look like, Mt Fuji.  Firepit will remain inside. Just off to the left of the picture is the mini-ramp.

Can you keep any kinda speed in that thing?

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: susej on November 27, 2009, 10:16:10 PM
Surprisingly, yes.

It is hard to get the speed to ollie the roll-in or come out of the bowl and hit the moonbank, but it's easy to maintain speed to endlessly do grinds and disasters and shit.

Yeah, there's a bank/quarter in the process of being made, mt fuji is coming up, keep working on the concrete block wallride, thinking of a super mini ramp...  Just gonna keep on building.

Update on the mini park I posted above:

While I've been out with the knee injury, the guys have kept on building. There's the moon bank, just out of this shot to the left, and the new bank/qp with burly thick concrete coping.  Looking forward to grinding this thing.

The top shot is a weird perspective though.  In the top shot, the far wall of the bowl is 30-35 ft away from the guy.   Far end is about as tall as my shoulders, sides are waist high. Moon bank is knee high, bank/qp is mid-thigh to waist high.

All pretty small, but fun.

The middle area of that coping is now worn way down.  Got its first serious working over today.

I couldn't hit it, but great day anyway.

I got a little bit of video.  And the Watercolor guys (the guys whose site that was) have been making one, but not done editing yet.  I'm told it'll be on youtube in the next few days.

I'll try to put something together.

Here's the video:

I suggest turning it off at about the 5:30 mark , since after that it's just a bunch of drunk guys talking about tacos and their new clothing company.

Nothing great, but a pretty fun time.  Everybody just cheering everybody on.  I'm the esteemed head judge...

It was rad.  Even though that was actually during the competition, everybody cheered each other on, and could laugh at themselves and others when they screwed up.

One dude would carve the high side, do a little bs 50 50, then the bump would take him out EVERY time.  He was laughing about it more than everybody else.

A lot of people, mexicans mostly, refer to americans as 'guero.' has nothing to do with being blonde or not. oh and by the way polly 'guerita' is usually an affectionate way to say 'guera'. born and raised in mexico, any more questions just ask.

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: susej on February 05, 2010, 03:49:33 AM
Yeah, something like that.  There are a couple of contest series that decide who gets to be pro - you win the amateur title one year, you're pro the next.  Also, there is a skateboarding governing body (?) known as GATE that can turn people pro.

As a result, there are guys that do every contest who turn pro, and guys who rip harder who will never be pro.

People don't go pro for their sponsors.

Moonbank got ripped out, and mesh layed over the dirt pyramid and flat area.

Concrete got poured on the pyramid on Saturday.

Flat area in front of the pyramid got poured yesterday.  Fun to be able to link up all the sections, go over the hip and roll into the bowl...

I have a DIY story.  Earlier today I went down to my local skate shop and the owner was telling me he needed help to build a transition to bank wall at a nearby park. I oblige and after picking up supplies, we get there and it's a bit sketchy, there is a museum nearby and a decent amount of people walking around... but there are a lot of trees and we are slightly secluded and decide to go for it.  Fast forward about an hour and a half and we have a decent amount of work done:

After that pic we had layed a bit more crete down before we get shut the fuck down.  Two museum staff workers walk up and ask us what we're doing.  In short we cleaned up everything, packed up and left.  Obviously its a bummer but we were stoked they didn't call the police on us.  Oh well, at least I got a good workout hauling all those bags of concrete to and fro.

wait, so you took all the concrete your laid back out?

and like bailgun said, confidence will go a long way. as long as you act like you are supposed to be doing what you are doing and make up a story to go along, you should be fine most of the time. next time just say you were hired to fix the wall due to stress cracks from erosion or something. haha

heres a picture of my friend mike skating the REALLY haggard mini ramp that i built in my room. i didnt spend a penny on materials and it was built in like a day. it was super steep and the flatbottom wasnt really connected to the quarterpipes. i was pretty much the only one who could get a solid run on it. everyone else would just drop in and do a trick, maybe 2 if they were lucky. i took it down a while ago. sometimes i miss it.

are you gonna cut a "key way" into the existing slab? that is the only way to have a smooth connection were the tranny meets the flat.

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: AUDITtheFED on May 15, 2010, 05:20:40 AM
Yeah we're cutting into the driveway a few inches so the seam is going to be flush & hopefully not crack.

I got a mini in the back with 7ft trannys & its 4 ft high... so the 6 & 1/2 ft tranny out front are kinda mellow @ 3 ft high but should be a nice fit with the 2 other ramps that will be hit in the line.

Free brick coping from a local pool construction company, any brick that has marks on the rounded edge they throw out so you could easily throw the secretary a starbucks card in exchange for 1st pickings of their weekly scraps. I got over $140 worth of this brick for free....

Thanks, if you could see the angle that flows into this corner off the other ramp & the space after the corner to hit the third ramp, it should flow  pretty well as long as I make the tranny steep enough on the corner... I'll try to get a pic from the roof and post it up.

east coast crust, do you have any tips for pouring the tranny? what type trowel works best? mix thick I assume.... I'm using 5000 psi

that quarter looks like a perfect surface, I poured a small triangle yesterday and still have to figure out how long to let it set before troweling....

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: east coast crust on May 25, 2010, 02:11:39 PM
a lot of getting the surface nice is in "floating" the rock down and bringing up the "cream". we have floats that we specially made out of fiberglass. it basiclly is the shape of what ever tranny you are using is. you can get a magnesium float at home depot that works really well but i suggest trying to make your own custom float. check out www.skatepark.org (http://www.skatepark.org) and go to there d.i.y. section there is tons of info on how to make them. hope that helps.

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: east coast crust on May 25, 2010, 02:15:19 PM
also get a bag of portland cement and add a shovel full to each bag that you mix, it will help with getting the cream that you are after. we used just regular bags of crete,5000 psi is fine but it cost more and i dont think it is needed for the size you are pouring...

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: bailgun on May 25, 2010, 04:38:50 PM
definitely get a magnesium float. it reacts with the concrete and brings up more cream. the more you work it with the mag, the more the aggregate will settle down and cream will rise.

to avoid this problem, make your forms bigger, like you're framing a regular wooden quarterpipe, putting 2x4s WAY back, and THEN put your fill in. you'll use more plywood, but your shit will last.

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made

this ramp is 5 minutes from my house, its 6 ft with 6'9" trannys. all hand poured pool coping until this morning when we finished the oververt corner and threw a tree branch up. He's using the brick left over from my shit & cornering this down slope with it then it'll hit that piece of pool coping so you'd grind brick, pool coping & the fucking tree branch in the same grind.

Sadly, that they would try to shut you down is all too believable.  What was their angle?  That you needed a building permit to 'landscape' your property?  I hope you told them it was private and that they needed to leave.  BTW, your project looks super fun and I've been enjoying seeing the progress.  Good luck with the rest of your pours.

Worst case I may have to move the piece we've been working on but I work from home and have all the time in the world to piss off whoever as soon as I get a clear answer from the man as to where I can build on my own fucking property. woooooo hoooooooo let freedom ring.......only where they tell you it can. fucking $laves we are.

Thanks. They're saying I'm over in the setback lines which is within 8 feet or so from my neighbors prop line.  I tried to find out who complained & they said it was an anonymous complaint.

What kind of at home work do you do if you don't mind me asking. And good luck with the building battle, what you have so far looks killer.

Ahh yes, a traditional go-to resource for the disgruntled neighbor trying to alter a project they don't like.  Setback lines should only apply to structures and not landscape or driveway features, but it sounds like the city told you as much already.  Bolts!

So I am going to have to take the piece that we've been working on down. So now I'm connecting the remaining pieces and bowling this bitch out.

It rains almost daily this time of year so it's hard to predict a good 8/10 hour stretch with no rain....  Still kicking it, the city did hinder that curved brick hip/bowl at the end of my driveway but I just altered the design a bit & will be posting some pics soon. It's still going to be built.

cool mold. have you ever messed with poured in place coping? it's way better than blocks, imo, since there's no seams, so it doesn't get knuckled out. plus, you can dye it, expose the aggregate, and go around corners blocks never could.

you use pvc pipe, cut in half for the front/bullnose part, and just handform the top. dudes did it on the extension at marginal, and is super good.

plus, you can leave the mold on it while it cures, which will keep people from wrecking it before it's time.  i think that skatepark.org has a little how-to on it in their diy section.

Where's the pics? How much vert did you leave on the wall? What are you gonna do with the grassy corner with the wall? Inquiring minds want to know...

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: susej on August 29, 2010, 03:26:14 AM
All excellent questions.

Don't have any new pics, but will take some when it is first skated, likely tomorrow.  Left 3 cement blocks worth of vert. the corner with the grass and concrete wall will be a qp on the left, into a corner, qp, then a hip near the right end of the wall.  I wanna do it with enough platform that you can roll in, or roll out and into the ramp, but it'll be tight.  Also wanna do it with pool coping and one row of tiles along the top, but these haven't been decided yet.

This is how I want to do my next project, if you use the right mixture the concrete will feel like it oozes SAlba sauce

me and my boy bryce spent about a year building this renegade diy, in a hidden ditch valley in dallas tx. the site was a drainage ditch adjacent to a railroad track, bout a 1/4 mile from the road. there was a field, and i sign posted: no dumping, and an illegally dumped, demolished pool!! everything fell into place, we utilized broken bricks, pool blocks, coping and rebar from the hazardous and illegally dumped trash(treasure).
in about a years time our spot was sick!! badass lines, ragin sessions just havin fun!
anyways, finally got busted, some concerned fuckin citizen called in some suspicious people carrying "chemicals" into the ditch.
at least thats what the pigs told me,
(it was us carryin crete up the hill)
anyways, dudes left, i stayed back to clean up and finish trowling the new spine,...
cops showed up.
long story short, i got charged with a felony criminal mischief, for allegedly interfering with the ditch!! i could have proved i didnt, because the ditch was still a perfectly funcktional, all we did was give it a new purpose.
best times there, miss that place.
but they are gonna stop me so easy,
were trying to take possession and maintain a new abandoned concrete slab now and build a new free diy park!
anyone wanna help out, and make it better, let me lknow!

and yea, i skipped out on bond just to make skatopia, the raddest place on earth!
gonna do it again this summer when we go out west!

Sorry, haven't got any more recent pictures, but nothing has been built since the bypass behind the rounded qp got finished. It still looks like in this

'10 12 5 CHILL SKATE JAM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8Xw-cqPp4Y#)

All that's changed is that the mini mini is being resurfaced, and the green mini is being dismantled. It'll be taken down by the pig farm you can see in the background of some of the pics, and doubled in width. Where it is now will be concreted. We hope to have that whole area done by summer.

hey susej, that park of yours is rad and i'm thinking about using concrete cylinders as coping too, but i wanted to know how they grind

bob: those concrete cylinders are really hard to grind when you first give em a go, but once they're worked in, they grind like a dream.

what size are the cylinders? 6x12? i was thinking of going with 4x8 sized cylinders. i've never built anything to skate before so i could use any kinda of feed back or help i can get

Damn, susej, that looks sexy. me and my friends are planing on building a little DIY spot in this cul de sac in the woods. it'll be a while before the initial build, were focusing on suplies first and building when it gets warm. its just gonna be a concrete ledge, a quarter, and a pole jam. maybe a pump bump

Rob, I'm pretty sure those cylinders are 4x8. Sounds right. If you put the tips of your thumbs together, and the tips of your index fingers together, they're that big around.

Tanner, just do something to get started. That's the hardest part. Once you got some work done, you can always go and do a bit at a time. You'll be glad you did.

susej, i totally agree. its a newly spawned idea, but will be started within the next couple of weeks. like i said, we need to make a trip to the home depot for 'crete and then go get some shit weve seen lying around our area (cinder blocks, a pole, stolen parking blocks, etc.).

also, a question to anyone who can answer, how hard is it to lift up a parking block? meaning, can you do it quick and unsuspicously? and what kind of crete is a good all around one?

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: krusher on February 05, 2011, 12:55:48 PM
Its been said many times around here but from what I understand for every 2 bags of ready-crete (any brand will do) add a heaping shovel full of Portland cement (any brand).

You can use #4 rebar as handles for parking blocks, just stab it through the holes and you and a buddy can turn the block on its side and carry it. If you're by yourself you can run rope and carry it like a bag. There are so many parking blocks that are not installed correctly and easy to steal just go for those.

If you stab a bunch of holes and fuck up a bunch of bags of concrete at the home depot when no one is looking, they'll be on a barging pallet in a couple of days

I'm planning to build a mini in a friend's backyard this summer :D it's going to be 18 feet long by 10 feet wide. 4" height with 6" extensions. but it's going to be in wood.. anyone knows how to make it last canadian winters eithout having to buy expensive stuff like ramp armor or anything like that cause we don,t have a lot of money for the project ..

If you don't have the money to build the ideal outdoor ramp, then just build what you can afford and do the repairs in Spring. You'll still be stoked. You can paint the shit out of everything (except the top surface) and do it every year. Concrete last pretty long too...

we have to do it in wood so it can be taken down if necessary.. Don't forget we have -30 Celsius degrees temperature here in the winter.. We thought about painting the whole thing with polyeurathane paint even the top layer to make it somehow weather proof and cover it with a big blue plastic thing ( i don't know how its called xD) thanks and if you guys have more ideas just post'em because we need some!

Instead of spending 2 Loonies on Doug Fir spend 4 bucks on Redwood and Cedar. If you can concrete in your pliers 2 feet below the frost line, this will help against shifting from the soil contacting and expanding

8' 2X4, drill a hole big enough to put a pencil through 1" any from one end. 3' from your pencil hole drill a hole for a deck screw, then at 4' and 5'. You screw in the hole for 3' on a the plywood your cutting, put your pencil in the pencil hole and swing the 2X4 to draw. You still have to make sure your beginning and end points meet where you want them but you'll figure it out. for a mellow quarter use the five foot hole. For a rad quarter use the 3 foot and get a little vert

Not photo's, I know, but these dudes made a sweet edit that was filmed at this spot across the park from my house. I put the pole jam together from a concrete filled pole that I found in the parking lot and what I think is a tether-ball holder. Other dudes have been doing the 'crete work, bondo and the angle iron on the bench. I need to get it together and make an edit of my own soon. There's also the ten stair from the end of the Non-Tage video I posted awhile back.

A 60 pound bag of concrete is supposed to be equal to a cubic foot. If you’re pouring your concrete at 3 inches thick you should be able to fill a space of 1 foot by 4 feet with one bag. This should help you visualize how many bags you need. Most places only sell 90 pound bags.

You can also take pieces of scrap plywood or shelving and screw them together and cut your transitions out of those. Most DIY is done on a teenager’s budget so there are a lot of good cheap ways of building

where exactly do i make the hole on the plywood? in the center or one of the corners? i don't want to fuck up one of the pieces of ply trying to figure it out.

I was hoping you would figure that out, it’s kind of hard to explain. First off you are going to use the screw as a turning point so you don’t need to drill a hole into the plywood just screw the screw in a little so that the 2X4 will swing around.  I’ve have never done it for just concrete forms so there may be a better way (there is always more than one way to do sometime right).

If you are doing it on a 4X8 foot sheet of plywood and if you transition is going to be 3.5 feet, pick a corner. On the four foot side of that corner measure up 42” and make a mark. Are you going to just make a rib or are you going to use the ply for the whole side, which would need to include the platform depth? Let’s say you are going to include the platform depth of 16”. From that mark of 42” on the 4 foot side, mark for the platform depth of 16” at 16” in on the 8 foot side. 42” in from that spot and 42” up from the edge is where you will screw your screw to swing the 2X4.

I told you it was hard to explain. You’re not gonna hurt the ply wood by screwing a bunch of holes and drawing a bunch of lines till you get one that you like

yeah i just went for it after a couple of beers. figured it out for the most part but thanks man, the help is definatly appreciated. to answer your question as to what i'm using the plywood for, i'm going to use the forms i make as a guide for when i do the back screeting phase of the concrete pour. i'll have one forn on either side of the qp

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: dtotherob on February 15, 2011, 05:49:53 PM
when i built my QP, i just freehand drew a transition that i thought i'd like.  i used the swinging 2x4 method, but didn't make any holes.  i just used it to give myself a nice arc.  no idea what my trannies are.  can't wait to see pics.

you can also attack a circular saw to a small piece of 1/4 inch plywood at the end of the 2x4, then affix the rig to a table. then you can cut tons of templates.

I can already imagine all the possibilities of that love seat, sounds like so much fun. Between that and the other post with the pool that is skate-able and swim-able and the skate-able fire pit, I've been just brainstorming all these ways to make stuff that is functional as patio furniture and skate obstacles, it would be so awesome to have a patio area like that, where you could skate by day, and then have a sweet party/bbq at night.

I can't remember the coping color, but the bowl is blue, tight, and rad.  It was one he built and it was designed to be functional for skating, and for swimming.  I want one.

It looks like the only reason for the fence is to keep migrant can collectors from using spot for a shortcut.

I want to do a how to on fence opening. Most people don't know if you cut one of those wires in a chain link fence on the top and bottom you can unscrew that wire out like you can any screw and it opens the fence.

I've got a 4 day weekend coming up thanks to migrant workers- THANK YOU!!!. I'm gonna barrow some bolt cutters from work on Wednesday. I've never been arrested before, we'll see if I can keep my 4 day weekend with my freedumb

seriously. go early morning to cut the fence, without a skateboard, wearing some work gear, boots, and a vest, then go back later on and skate it.

I back this totally, I saw these two guys on my street today dressed like that, and they could have been doing anything. They just had a yellow flashing light on their car, which wasn't even a work truck, just a normal looking compact suv, a nissan xterra or something. No official insignia on the car or any signs saying who they were affiliated with. They weren't DPW, and they weren't even part of a large crew, it was just the two of them. They had a couple cones out, and were doing something to a barricade on the side of the road, but everyone just drove past them, it looked official.

If someone questioned what I was doing I would probably just do whatever bill murray does in that scene in ghostbusters where they are pretending to be city workers to break into that manhole in the middle of the street, haha.

^Radical! That place looks pretty evil.

I want to build a "Reverse transition" add on to my ramp which would turn one of the quarters into a bank with a parking block on top. So much work though...

I got in a fight with my boss at work over some overtime he was trying to steal from me, I'd got piss and stormed out forgetting to grab the bolt cutters. I can get them on Sunday so I'm looking for a Sunday night partner. I was given the idea of detaching the fence from most of the post and pulling it over the barrier to give the effect that it was still there.

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: krusher on April 08, 2011, 12:50:02 AM
So Sunday night I ran a caper, got stoked, came home to tell y'alls, and I was banned...

Even though I've seen the fence guys do the whole spin out the wire trick I couldn't perform. Basically what happened was I took my bolt cutters to the fence finding there was no way to make the spot look unmolested. So I started to cut the fence near the poles at the points where 2 wires met so it was faster. I was able to relieve most of the fence from the poles. A van rolled by that was owned by the company that owns the parking lot, then it rolled by again much slower. I'd got scared and bounced.

I noticed that this spot will be pretty much a one and doner, there won't be much satisfaction in liberating it. I need to find some people who would be stoked on liberating it for one weekend and over it. My plan is to cut the fence below the top of the barrier so we can do some concrete work on it without the fence looking like its been fucked with. Then when the day comes that it is ready to go, cut the top bar and shred it till we get busted for skating in an alley.

The funniest part was I was dressed up like a bank robber, walked to the spot like I owned the place and started at it. There was a homeless dude unpacking all of his shit and making his home for the night. Once he saw me he didn't say a word he just started to pack his shit up and left.

I need a partner on the corner, I've got walkie talkies, the alley is one way. I just need someone parked on the corner 500 feet away to radio me when someone or some vehicle has turn into the alley then I can hide my shit and act like I was some homeless dude. Still no takers. I guess skateboarding is no longer a crime...

Just needs a little Bondo on a crack at the top of the stairs, and it will be good to go.

Nothing says spring like the smell of freshly mixed Bondo in the air...

five. bucks.

That offer was for the new guy not some old DIY veteran.

I use to be the manager of a fiberglass shop for a custom yacht builder. I've used all types and brands of plastic filler. Yet in my life as a builder of all sorts of stuff I've found new ways of doing things from people who have learned how to do those things on their own. Most of the time they're doing it wrong or the hard way but sometimes you find some true genius and I tend to find that a lot in the skate world. Bondo is a simple mix but I'm always looking for new ideas

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: Long Way Home on April 13, 2011, 12:57:31 AM
I thought about painting the bondo, just finding some sort of gray close to the color of the concrete and just spray painting over the bright pink. I do kinda like the idea of it saying "SKATE HERE!" to the local neighborhood kids, but I think the landlord will be like "what's up with the pink shit all over the sidewalk?"

I assumed you know how to bondo, I figured it was more about having the "how-to" made. I don't know if I do anything differently than anyone else, no one ever really showed me how to do it. I saw some stuff in a crack at the skatepark, and asked someone what he thought the stuff was. He was like "It's bondo, they use it for cars, but we use it for cracks." So I bought some, and a putty knife and tried it out. The only thing I might do differently is I find as much stuff to jam in the crack as possible before I bondo it to get more use out of one can. I also figured out this technique of throwing fine sand or dirt over the top of it right after you run the putty knife over it to hide it a little bit, so it's not so obvious that you did anything to the site, sometimes it works ok, sometimes it doesn't. I have a couple other little tricks for fixing ledges that involve makeshift molds and pam cooking spray. Next time I get a chance to bondo something I'll take pictures and try and document it, and hopefully add a little more info than the basic "mix red stuff with gray stuff, fix crack" kinda thing.

Post by: krusher on April 13, 2011, 02:57:25 AM
With all polyester resins like bondo it will diminish with time, especially with regards to the amount of sunlight it receives. Any top coat you give to bondo will ensure a longer life. I wasn't talking in terms of disguise when it came to applying primer I was speaking in terms of longevity. If you put a top coat on bondo it will last longer. Primer is all you really need in terms of skating on top of bondo

Plus if you use white catalyst your bondo mix will come out gray

I've worked in construction since I was 14 and the one thing I know is that a good construction worker only does what they're told to do. So if the Boss Man doesn't see your DIY then nothing will be done about it. Good luck! I hope you get a good summer out of it.

Success.  A big thank you to Eby for coming up on his Friday night to help me out, and for shaping the landing to catch you perfectly.  A couple construction workers, night guards I guess, watched us do most of it and didn't say shit to us.  I don't know if it will last long, as its right next to the entrance to one part of what's being worked on and the construction is progressing a lot.  Both barriers are way more grindable now, but they are slick as fuck with the paint on them, you have to carve onto them, and the traffic is right next to you, so its still a challenge to make your trick.  First session on it yesterday, I got a couple shitty backside grinds, but couldn't bring the 5-0 into the landing with both feet on the board, and ended up going to back-lip and eating shit everytime I tried to throw my weight into the back smith grind.  Something to work on tomorrow.

I did blogged (http://blog.networkskate.com/2011/07/daily-diy_03.html) it in case you didn't know. I was in LA and too drunk to remember anything that I'd did...

I hope this doesn't kill your DIY spirit because your experience is the type of thing that skateboarding needs. Some true hands on work and complete DIY dedication

Its not really dead, just relocated and renovated.  I hadn't thought about naming it...96th and Shred?

Both chunks of concrete were still there, loose.  I placed the smaller one against the barrier essentially where it was before, as it still pretty much fits, and put the other on the backside, as it kind of fits there, and that side is currently blocked from traffic.  Now you have a landing if you want to try and transfer that shit, as that side is pretty much all vert.  Its almost more fun now as it is steeper and there's no crack between it and the flat, so you don't need an assisted landing.  There is some unavoidable chunkiness in the runway right before you carve into it, but I kind of like that, its just distracting enough to prevent you from overthinking what you are doing.  I'm debating bondoing the pieces I've got, or re-creting part of the spot, and maybe something else in the vicinity.  Its like a jersey barrier village down there.

That's what we were calling it that blog is from the first few weeks then the dude doing that stopped updating it. The newest stuff is on my tumblr I have a zine with a bunch more stuff in it too I'll upload some of that stuff in my winter boredom. Since the leaves fell off the trees and the kids found the spot they all call it diy or something.

Long time lurker so thought it was time to brave the seas.
This forum, and the recent issue of Kingpin, inspired me and a couple of mates to raid some sites, get some materials and build. Threw this up as a first attempt. Was pretty psyched on how it came out.
Unfortunately due to poor spot planning in less than 24 hours is was removed completely with no trace.
Was a fun experience building late into the night, in silence with nothing but a couple of head torches to light the way. On the hunt for somewhere else now. Better planning, want to actually skate number 2, even if it is just once.

I fixed the box at my local skate shop. It's outside 24/7 so it was in need of some repair. I tried to convince them on doing something with concrete... maybe later.

^Being from southern California I would say "close enough." HAHA

My friend Jason was telling me about the kids in his neighborhood coming to his shop and telling him they had no place to skate. He would tell them to make the spots themselves like he use to do when he was growing up. They would tell him that they didn't know how too and that it couldn't be done.

I told him that I wanted to film a How To on the easiest way I know how to build a good ledge. He found the spot, we got the stuff nearly for free, and we built this...

No shit! I'm glad it's just not around here.

Kids complaining about not having shit to skate all the time.

Ok come help us build a spot.

Hell no that's too much work!

Apparently skateboarding owes these kids something. Like a back truck to the face.

Title: Re: Post up photos of spots you have made
Post by: krusher on April 30, 2012, 09:48:19 AM
Maybe there is hope for the next generation. These kids are old enough to drive but not to vote and they are killing it with this spot.

Even though they have a wealth of building knowledge around them they ask for no help and just want to get the spot done by their hands. These kids are not lazy, they are learning by trial and error and they are definitely going to get better.

I didn't help them build the spot I'm just documenting their build for a web article.

Nice! It's good to see.

http://durtbowl.wordpress.com/ (http://durtbowl.wordpress.com/)

Here's a recap of how figment went. It was an awesome weekend. The local business are now trying to get that street shut down so we can have it.

The best part did happen to be all the kids that came out. Most had never skated before. By the end of the weekend they were tearing through the sculpture!

We've been working on this for last few weeks, theres a quarter the same group of people made about a year ago.  I don't recall honestly if i took part in that or not.  Either way building this for my homies fundraiser.  All works been done at night haven't gotten any day shots yet but it's coming along.  After looking through the older posts was inspired to post here.  note none of said pictures were taken by me.

I went to talk to the admin of this sports "club" because i wanted to build some shit around the part they gave us.
it already has some wooden shit but im kind of tired of skating the same so i went to do that with the boss of the place, but he told they were going to remove that to take it somewhere else in the same club he showed me this montages and told that they were going to build some more around, but it was pure crap so i want someone to give some suggestions on what can they change to that blueprint so it becomes skateable

here are the pictures or montages, whatever you want to call them:

Key way is when you cut or bash out the concrete right at the bottom of the transition. I:e: So that the concrete you pour can be nice and thick, instead of just sitting thinly on the ground.

BFD ALL DAY

Title: BFD ALL DAY?
Post by: krusher on October 19, 2013, 01:41:46 PM
^ That is a lot of hard work for a real shoty job. How long did that place last? Around here you would have to do repairs on the hour for that spot to last.

How much have you learned? Do you understand tensile strength? That is just so much hard work for a spot that is just going to crumble away

I'm sorry but I have notice you giving advice in the DIY threads and now that I've seen your work I just want to understand where you are coming from?

If BFD was built to last for a short while so people could get their trick in the video then I understand. When you say BFD all day it is very confusing.
