I learned how to ollie on a shitty K Mart board on carpet at a birthday party in March of 1999.  I had a real board by April, and proceeded to get my first hipper within 30 seconds of trying to do an ollie on my smooth garage floor.

10 years bitch!

Got a board in 1999.  I started late.

I used to borrow my cousin's plastic dinosaur board though...that thing was a BEAST.

Started a year and a half ago. I'm learning fast and quite honestly I have the internet for breeding and fueling my love for the industry while I can't skate. It's funny how just watching skateboarding can make you better at it.

Ha!It  is good to remember how you started skateboarding!

It was 7 years ago when i started. I was sick of the new basketball coach who came in the team and i started getting sick of this team game. So i started doing something of my own i borrowed a board from a neighbour and started skateboarding instead of going to practise with the basketball team. I remember my dad was extra mad about that especially when i was injured badly a year and a half later. So i quit skateboarding for two years,1 year rehab and 1  with parental conflicts
and some fear of stepping back on board. Eventually i started skating again  on my last year at school because i needed something to escape from the stress of the exams and since then i havent stopped!

19 hundred and 75  in the year of our LORD.  Killer times, no one worried about who's shoes you wore or if you rode trannys, street, schoolyards or the image you posed as, you just skated.  I was in the second grade and I was asked to stay after class because I didn't do so hot on some test, my reply to my teacher was I said I couldn't because I had to go skateboarding .......  I spent a shit ton of time in the library though, as the school had a subscription to Skateboarder Mag and Action Now. Plus books like The Skateboarding Book (http://www.francesfarmersrevenge.com/stuff/archive/skate/skateboardbook.jpg) If I remember there was a whole section of books that were skate related. That was back in the days when every town had a local skate park. I wonder what ever happened to them all.....

Make the most of what your city offers while you can. Nothing lasts for ever. No park was ever dozed because it was outdated.... Better yet, hook up with the old guys/girls that are lifers and do it DIY......

i started 2 years ago when i was 19. my 10 yr old brother actually got me going. i would  occasionally bring him 2 the skatepark cuz he was nuts about skating and my parents wouldnt take him and id maybe cruise around on his board for a few minutes but then i realized fuck it im not gonna do it for him anymore, im gonna do it for me. so my only friend that skated gave me an old setup and ive been hooked ever since. im still not that good  but i have never enjoyed something so much that i sucked at

^^^^Where does the time go?

I was given a skateboard when I was 9.  That would have been about 1979.

I just goofed around in my driveway on it though....  didn't start really skating hard and building shit (QPs, launch and wave ramps and half pipes) until 1984.

They came in blue, red and some swirly color as well. I think mine was the swirly colored one with green being the predominant color.   I could only find a pic of the blue one. I didn't have the double tail though.

2003 ish i guess. bought a 10 dollar complete from wal-mart. i think its like 9-ply, with a rad psychedelic pattern on the bottom, and big chunky plastic baseplates. the bolts weren't even countersunk. yeah, thats right. it was what you would call "the works." started rolling down my driveway, then my street. took me aproximately forever to learn how to ollie. Skated in the rain and ruined the griptape. graduated to a sweet 50 dollar complete from the interwebz. I was such a big spender.

every one of my friends quit to smoke weed, i still suck, and i still have fun.

Sometime in the mid-to-late 80's, first deck was a x2 nash that I actually still have, first legit setup was a powell-peralta hawk deck http://skateandannoy.com/features/ebay/2008/ebay066/images-big/hawk1000.JPG
Rode that thing until like 96 or so when I traded it for a beat up new school setup.

I started regularly skateboarding four years ago at age 51.

Before that, I skateborded for two years starting at age 11 in 1964.

Couldn't you just say "I've skated on and off for six years" instead of having that bizarre pride that many older, athletic people have?

Thanks Chuck but that's not "all" I've got.  It is just a part of what I got.

I'm proud of my age and that ois why I tell it.  I don't follow or admire anything about the youth culture.

Get yourself some bindings on a board that is stable enough to ride without falling off all the time and you'll make it to 55 just fine.

Title: Re: When did you start skateboarding?

But you "skate" with your feet strapped to your board?   Seriously?   Like an innertube or some shit?  Ok if that's for real what you do then hold up.

I'm 33 and I'll be able to skate when I'm 50.....sans straps.    You are only going to dig yourself a miserable hole of stupidity if you come to Thrasher talking some ish about straps.    I don't care how old you are and how long you quit.

Which leads to the second major issue that sucks about you.   You QUIT for 30+ years or some shit?   Anyway attach that to your strap on issue and you....like most have already pointed out....are not a skateboarder.

You unfortunately are harping in on some shit that people have put there entire lives into.    The kids that are on here (like I once was), if they are real skaters are completely consumed by skating in their lives.     The old men like myself, never stopped.   From jump ramps, to pressure flips, to handrails, to broken body will only skate tranny......this shit was my life.

To the kid comparing old softball players to old skaters well maybe you have a point.   I don't think you understand what it meant to be skating back then and thus you'll never understand an older skater's pride.    Don't misinterpet that BS though.    Real skateboarders are out there to skate and not talk or brag about how long or what they've done on a skateboard.

Anyway....

He'll say some stupid shit and fall deeper into kookness, then people will call him on it, then he'll make a bunch of logical fallacies geared toward grammar/spelling/lack of education, then everyone will tell him to gtfo and he'll never leave until everyone ignores his attention starved ass.

Things must be real lonely at the old folks home.

Which leads to the second major issue that sucks about you.   You QUIT for 30+ years or some shit?   Anyway attach that to your strap on issue and you....like most have already pointed out....are not a skateboarder.

Hey now, that's all some of us got.

I've still got quite the climb to 55 though. My body's fucked now. I can't imagine it in 15 years.......

I can skate just fine without the bindings. If I want bindings I'll go snowboarding. Although if there ever becomes a day when I need bindings to ride my skateboard I'll quit.

Listen you were young once too, I bet there were people that didn't admire your souped up Model T and you playing your Glenn Miller records at 10 on the volume knob. Let the youth culture be just that......youth.

I started in 1948. Age 6. Peter Parken was a surfer in San Deigo gave me my first skate board.
I unlike this other character embrace the youth culture. Bindings on a skateboard? No I dont even do that. I'm 67 and I still ride bowls and make the trip to the liqour store on my skateboard with no bindings.

I rode for Skee Skate and Sokol SurfSkate. That was in 1961 til 1967. All these loser hippie types joined in around 1965 and us older skateboarders hated them.

Youth culture is foolish.

Nobody wants to be like goofy kids.  Everything about your culture is full of shit.

Never trust anyone under 30.

So I'm assuming your rants on here are to change youth culture?   WTF because you are trying your best to be immersed in what you deam foolishness.

Nobody wants to be like goofy kids?    Again is that why you come to these message boards?   To remind yourself that you're better than others?   WTF?

Having companies on the NY stock exchange that represent skating should be the only thing your Bill O'Reilly war promoting whining about X-mas being stolen greedy mind should be able to grasp.  You measure things by their monetary worth and thats it.    Skaters with multi-million dollar contracts still have you looking at the act of skating and its culture as "SHIT".

Well I'm 33 so trust me on this when I say...FUCK YOU, log off, and pull the trigger.

I don't care about children or their culture.

Your measure everything by how many stickers your weekly minimum wage can buy..

[/quote]

From the amount of posts and the void that fills them I say you seem to be somewhat interested in, if not "care", about youth culture.

You strapped on your mountain skurfer...oh thats right to prove your a man ready to fight these hippies that are going to steal your baby Jesus right out from under you.

I never bought a sticker the 23 years I've skated.   Never been my thing.    I did however earn my B.S. in Molecular Biology and it has found me jobs that pay a little over minimum wage and provided me with such employment all over the country.

I measure everything, life, by my freedoms.    You support Bill O'reilly and an agenda to supress freedom.    You lauded skatestopping in other posts.    You have issues with skateboarding and some of the subcultures within the subculture.    You're just a tired old man that can stand people enjoying life in a way you're too much of a pussy to embrace.   Do I have to repeat my best advice for you?

My kids and I watched Thrashin a long time ago. I have skated with Dave Duncan and have gone to service with Christian Hosoi. We had a lot in common most skateboarders have always been kind of outcasts. I don't know why, thats just the way it is. I unlike  I want my kids and grandkids to be freethinkers I'm 67 and have done alright for my self. I can still skateboard with out bindings. LOL

I grew up on the rock and roll. I love that song Wild In The Streets all my kids used to blare that song.

therefore, you do not skateboard.
My skateboard has bindings and I call it a skateboard.
so if i put a wig on a pig and call it a beauty queen it suddenly just becomes a beauty queen?

Sure, if you want it to be a beauty queen in order to justify your beastiality.

However, my skateboard fits the legal definition of a skateboard according to my local code of laws.  Does your local code describe a beauty queen as a pig with false hair and makeup?

I think your opinion says more about the quality of your local women than it does about defining what is a skateboard.

Just saying something isn't true doesn't make it not true.

Yeah, I like skateboarders too.  They are so unique, hardcore and underground.  Even though everyone wears their shoes and tshirts, their top skaters have TV shows and video games and millions of dollars and they all have to dress, act and think alike.

They are all such "free thinkers" they don't allow anyone to think differently.  They are such "artists" that they don't keep score but they all know who rips, who sells out and who is sponsored.

You are all just common, run-of-the-mill, every day, brown shoe, drones just like any insurance salesman in a suburban house in the 50's.

We had a lot in common most skateboarders have always been kind of outcasts. I don't know why, thats just the way it is.

They aren't outcast.  They just want to be seen as outcast to establish themselves in the counterculture culture market.  It is all about making money just like any Wall Street banker.

You are not influenceing your kids to be free thinkers if you are encouraging them to think like skateboarders.  Skateboarders are the most mainstream and conformist of any group in the country.

They won't even torerate anyone developing variations in the standard equipment they ride.  Look what they did to in-line skating, scooters and BMX.  It is simple frat boy mentality.

I don't know the song you are talking about but I do know the movie.  I think your kids should follow the example from the movie "Wild in the Streets" and keep you high on LSD in an old folks home.

Unlike your taking a strap-on ride of life via the goggles of Bill O'reilly talking points sad life that it is,  most skateboarders do it for the pure love of it.    I would bet 97% of skateboarders have and will never collect a paycheck for skateboarding.     Yet they keep skating.    You're offbase as always.

So skateboarders are the most conformist group in the country?   How'd you measure that.    A study of 10000 skaters vs. say 10000 Mountainboarders would definitely show skaters are more diverse in culture.    Do you even know how many people skate in the world and what that truely means?    Do you even know what DIY means to skating and to beauracrats and the fact the we are true fucking patriots that will come and take you're lame ass trail and make it into a concrete wonderland that you'd be to much of a pussy to drop in on.    You'd rather argue about the fucking rules and how they should be followed as seen with your post about the kid getting in trouble for SKATING at the phucking skatepark!

Skaters are fucking mavericks.   I'm sure that buzz word will click with your rethuglican mindset.

"They won't even tolerate anyone developing variations in the standard equipment..."   you say.   One, you sound like a whiny old man.    Are you Daniel Geismer upset that your "developed" new Seismac trucks failed?     Again, I know you can understand this...."If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Systematically you fail to show you know jack shit about skating.    Skateboards haven't changed dramatically in a long time yet tricks and skill level have progressed.   Sorry I know you don't and never will know what that feels like but if you were by the love of God somehow allowed that chance to maybe scratch a grind in a pool, switch back tail a ledge, or even pressure flip your town gap, you'd maybe understand that the deck, the trucks, the wheels....everything...it all works fine.    It's the operator that has the issues if you suck, or say have this strap on fetish.

What have "we", skateboarders, done to in-line skating and skooters?    I'm curious to know what the collective world of skateboarding has done to destroy rollerblading and razors.    Again you're just whining old man.   And for BMX...well if you were actually skating in 70s and 80s you know what the deal is with that.   BMX was once more popular than skating and man I don't even have to explain this to you other than you just have no phucking clue.

You would suggest putting KIDS in an old folks home (bizarre yes) and feeding them LSD.    You feel a need to control everything to give you a false sense of security.    You live a sad life of calling out generalizations and mainly just untrue shit on a message board.    Good luck in your "fight" with Bill and all the other control freak in the closet facist bible humpers.

Say you do like Bill right?   And his network?   And coming here where underage boys are?   Don't get caught up like that big wig Fox producer just did   ;)

There is nothing special about you or skateboarding.  You should quit and try to find something to do that is unique and different and artistist and special.  Skateboarding ain't it.

And don't ask me what it is.  I don't really care if you ever find it.  I don't care anything about you or your life.  You are just another punk on a web site.

The 51 year old has about the same ability to elaborate as a 5 year old yet calls anyone who rides a skateboard without a strap on "stupid".

Sweeping generalizations only point to one thing about your level of intelligence.   You and those that share your mentality, that someone should stop doing something because you don't like it AKA totalitarianistic fucktard thinking, yes........nature will win and you guys will die slowly.    Not fast enough though.

Keep on makin' yourself feel better by talking shit to kids.   Anonymously....on a skate, no mountain in skate, skateboard website.

Keep the strap on alive.    No need to downplay one thing because you weren't accepted at your local strap on cage, I mean skatepark, I mean trail or whatever the hell it is you claim you do.

You could turn all your negative energy into a great new strap-on forum/message board.    It could include mountainboardin, those lame surfboards with bindings, hell even let those killer tomatoe snowboarders convene there.      I can see you being a big success there since you know you're so intelligent an all.

And finally, WTF are you saying when you say quit b/c skateboarders think what they are doing is "special".     Can it be understood that you clearly have 0% understanding of what skateboarding is and means to real skateboarders?      Just keep on posting and you'll keep proving it time and time again.

Cheers bud!

When I was a wee lad, I started skateboarding in rural New York.  It was quite difficult for me because I didn't have the correct shoes to get enough 'pop'.  Everyone else was wearing these new things called Air Jordans and were shredding all over the place.

Luckily, a strapping young man named Primo came to my school to do a demo, and he was jumping really high off the ground with his board miraculously stuck to his feet.  He told me his secret; "sky hooks".  It was like Gordie Howe saying he used steroids.  I was crushed.

Not willing to stoop to his level or shell out $100 for a pair or "dope" shoes, I chucked my board into the woods, grew a mullet and moved to Canada.

I still consider myself to be a skateboarder at heart, but I'm not going to use performance enhancers of any sort.  Nowadays I get my thrills from slashing peoples face off with a stick, shaving rookies balls, and driving the team zamboni wasted.

Go Mustangs!

i was like "your full of shit" but then i saw my friend who was 17 or 18 at the time show up to a party with like four different chicks in his car, and they were all like 26 years old, and im pretty sure he banged every single one of them that night. fucking hockey.

when i was in high school my friend told me his junior A (semi-pro) hockey team played this game where all the dudes jerked off in a circle, and then splooged on a cracker or a piece of bread or something in the middle. and then the dude who didnt splooge had to eat the piece of bread... pretty gay sounding. i was like "i knew yall was gay" and they were like "no dude we arent, i know its fucked, its just a humiliation thing, but we also have sword fights, and i know that sounds pretty gay too, but we arent, there is no man-on-man ejaculation or boners or anything like that." and i was like "well you are lookin at guys dicks, thats pretty gay" and they were like "yeah but we make up for it, we fuck like 50 girls every weekend, that other shit is just some bonding shit".

i was like "your full of shit" but then i saw my friend who was 17 or 18 at the time show up to a party

And that was when you started skateboarding?

8 years ago when i was 12, i think. did it for a few years until 9th grade when i hurt my hand/wrist bad doing a handrail [board shot out, slammed my wrist on the rail and then landed on it] and quit for a while because i didn't want to fuck my hand up for playing guitar. then it was kind of on/off for the next couple of years and then got really back into it about a year and a half ago, lots of stuff happened and i didn't step on a board for a few months and then right when i wanted to really skate again, new jersey winter happened. now i've been skating nonstop against ever since it's been tolerable to be outside again.

oh jeez... this is so not shredding, but here goes...
played tony hawks pro skater (the first one on N64) and thought it was kinda cool, but wasnt real into it. Next day i say CKY2000 and it looked like those guys were havin so much fun... got a board from my friends garage and didn't put it down since... i guess i have tony hawk and bam to thank now... sad huh?
however, im sure theres about a billion other people who have the same sad story...
just to leave with some dignity, i never owned an element board or any bam related products or tony hawk stuff for that matter.

I remember my friend had a big old farm and had some wood and bricks on his back patio.  We'd make the gnarliest shit and ride up it and then try and 50-50 down a loose metal fencepost with screws sticking out of it at the end.  Thinking back, I can't believe I ever got to the top of that beast, much less came close to grinding to the bottom.  Pretty much 10 years ago to the day.  I also remember I was big into punk rock, hated big corporations and shit...and hearing about all the X-games/Tony Hawk hoopla and just thinking "Fuck, fine time to be getting into this..."  Went to the x-games the next year and remember it being the most vile thing I've ever seen.

First deck was a Black Label with Indys and sooooft Bones wheels.  That was a good day.

all this fighting.

I started in '01 when a buddy bet me I couldn't skate.  Right foot stepped on first, started pushin' around goofy.  Liked it.  Got my ollie the next day.  Pop shuv that week and been stuck on stupid ever since.  I was 14, which is late to the game now.  Word to good times.  This made me remember my old crew and all the shit fucked spots we used to play around on.  Beat down loading docks and churches and shit.

I started like ~ 20 years ago.  I was in the car with my dad and I saw a dude pushing down the street and I was in shock, it just looked like the funnest thing ever.  I was in first or second grade... cant really remember.  Although I do remember bombing down a hill on my knees, hit a rock and fell right on my face, scrapped the hell out of my chin.  First slam of many.

haha people should skate on their knees and asses and whatever else they feel like more often.  Just a good reminder that a skateboard is just a fun toy to play on.

1966 on a very steep neighborhood sidewalk in the south area of Lincoln, Nebraska. My skateboard was a "Sokal" that had standard steel rollerskate wheels and mechanism. Very primitive, but it was retail.

I don't skateboard anymore due to my age, but I appreciate the advances in technology and presentation skateboarders are capable of these days.

I remember seeing Tony Hawk do the 900 on the Xgames and I realized there's a lot of possibilities for a skateboard, not just to ride it.

I got into the punk scene at 17 years old. And listening to all of that really got me into my life long run I am trying to embark on now. I started skating when I was 19 and will continue to do so until I can't stand on a board anymore. I had on and off spurts of skating since I was 10 though. Skate for a year, don't skate for a year. Really lame I know, I wish when I was younger I had a passion for it like I do know, but what ya gonna do? All I can do now is SHRED UNTIL DEAD!

I started about 16 years ago when I was 5. I got this old plastic deck from K-Mart for christmas, it was this beast and it said "Rad-a-saurous Rex" with this dinosaur in a hawaiian shirt and he was giving the shaka sign.

I didn't know I could turn on the board for the first month I had it so I would get to the corner and hop off my board and turn it.
