Title: price of shoes
Post by: rawbertson on March 30, 2009, 09:36:42 AM
i noticed pretty much every skateboarder has "skate" shoes, like es, emerica, lakai, globe, etc. you know all the big ones. i havent bought any of these brands in at least two years, and i have saved so much money. i bought these adidas "Comptown St." shoes for 40$ and they are the best shoes i have ever skated. (http://www.kaboodle.com/hi/img/2/0/0/25/b/AAAAAuOf07gAAAAAACW7JQ.jpg)

mine arent gay colours like this, mien are just white with blue stripes.

they are simple shoes, flat sole, and heres the kicker: THEY ACTUALLY LAST. i blow out shoes in a matter of a few sessions more often than not. i have skated these for at least a month now and there are very few signs of wear.

people bitch to me about how "3 flips in half cabs are so much easier". i can do every single trick in any pair of shoes, i dont know where people get this frrom. certain shoes feel better than other ones, yeah, but these ones, i am just killing it every day. i never feel like my feet are coming off the board or its so bulky so i have no feeling on flip tricks. and i have bought lakai, ipath, everything, the most expensive skate shoes out there. basically nothing touches these, and they are some of the cheapest shoes ive got. so why the fuck do etnies and dc cost 130$ for a shoe with basically the same materials? are their marketing costs so high that this is the only way they can make profit? cant be.

arent skaters usually dirt bags? yes. they ride old beat up boards for long time and wear ghetto ass shoes, shoe goo'd up to hold on longer. this is so fucked. if they just made the shit a bit cheaper wed buy a lot more and would be better at skating as a result beacuse we wouldnt be riding wack gear. MAYBE THEY DO IT TO KEEP THIER PAID PROS ON TOP?? i doubt it, but its some greedy bullshit. adidas makes a ton of money, yeah their volumes are way higher so they can sell to sport marts, but i think these skate shoe companies need to re-think their strategies. every company is going the high-cost route, and this to me reflects the opposite of skateboarders' actual wants. Lakai is supposed to be "so down for skateboarding", but they are just like all those other companies. they would go low-budget route if they were truly down for skating because as we all know, and as i have just proved, quality skate shoes CAN be sold at a reasonable price.

I don't think 50 bones for shoes is bad at all.

I don't think 50 bones for shoes is bad at all.

hey- i know shoes are cheaper in the u.s.a. I should have mentioned that. We pay a lot more for skateboarding stuff in canada. i remember i went to FTC in san francisco and i told the guy working i didnt have 200$ for a new complete. he said "you gettin a handjob with that complete too?" i spent 270$ on my skateboard last summer beacuse i left my complete at the skatepark after smoking 4 blunts between just me and chad.

toy machine deck - 90$
bones precision bearings - 70$
indy trucks - $70
bones 54mm wheels- $40
this is all tax included

typical shoe prices in canada:
vans: 80$
DC Manteca / Es Accell : 100$
Lakai pro model : 120$
Supra pro model: 150$

i remember when i first started skating, i saw Tony Hawk Adios for 130$ or soemthing ridiculous in 1998.

maybe we are just gettign ripped off in canada. sounds like you are getting good shoes for $50, but there is no such thing as a skate shop that sells shoes here for under 100$ basically. any skate shops that DO sell vans, it costs more than at footlocker or sportsmart or whatever.

www.underworld-shop.com - use that as a reference - generally add 10 to 20$ on any price on that website- and thats the prices we pay. the sad thing is the margins are so piss poor, even at these high-ass prices. could have soemthing to do with poor distribution in canada.

no, the money is not getting eaten by anyone or anything, but i eat a lot when i get baked, which is at least 2 times a day, and i eat a lot of burgers from wendy's, jr bacon cheese, i think that is whgere a lot of the dough goes. the employee said to me "yo you realize you have paid me several weeks of work by your purchases alone, right?" and iw as like "dude you dont gotta rub it in just get me the damn food". #6 spicy chicken is good too, my friend at work tried to tell me it sucks, but hes fucking 38. im 23 so hes got a decade and a half of extra weight on him, i see where hes comin from.

rawbertson i know exactly what you mean about higher shoe prices in canada. i live in ottawa but go 2 school in cornwall and the shop rate around here is ridiculous. i always hear kids at the skatepark like "im saving up for the fallen chiefs which are $105" and i laugh. honestly though im picky as fuck when it comes to shoe prices. i can honestly say that i've never payed more than $60 for a pair of skate shoes. you gotta keep your eyes peeled for sales and whatnot. i got a pair of mariano 2's from Top Of The World for $30 at the beginning of the year. every once in a while go to the local winners and you can find some steals. i know its not supporting local shops but hey, when you're on a budget just do what you gotta do.

Just go to a factory second store. I score kicks for $30 regularly from Ross. The only difference is like a stitch that ran in the wrong spot or some shit.

thats sick i was actually in your area about a month ago. i travelled to montreal but stopped in cornwall to see a friend. its like right on the border of the u.s., this was before i was acquitted, and my cell phone was beeping off the hook "welcome to the u.s.a.!" I thought for sure i was going to get a breach of terms.
i guess the canadian government/police force doesnt keep TOO close of tabs on their felons...

winners is where i bouht my last 4 pairs of shoes but they had absolutely nothing good the last 2 tiems i went. now that its summer again they probably have more. i got nike airs there for fucking 40$ they were amazing for skating but they blew out kinda quick.

i think winners is the canadian equivalent of ross because we get that same kinda stuff just a stich in the wrong place or whatever

1 USD = 80 cents Canadian today
for the past year Canadian money has been worth more than American money
and it is projected that our money will be worth double your money within a decade
so laugh it up now, but you have already seen the canadian dollar far surpass the US dollar
even though our money is worth almost the exact same, shit is ALWAYS 50 dollars cheaper in the states

^^ your little formula is bass ackwards ^^

it's this:

1 CAD = 80 cents USD today

and it was only worth (slightly) more than 'merican money for about 60 days in late 2007.

a time in which I ordered many an item from online shops in the US. muah.

plus, you're assuming "real money" is USD. c'mon, man! its donuts!

a currency our nation's police forces tirelessly protect with the utmost diligence.

I wish we had Tim Hortons in Washington, we don't have waffle houses either.

Waffle house is the bee's knees my friend. When your road tripping, keep an eye out.

But you kind of already sound like you know what your missing.

i didn't know anyone that wore vans around my part of florida. the skateshop didn't even sell them. they might have sold them in the mall or in ross...
