Title: Pier 62 NYC
Post by: Bxsteez on January 24, 2010, 04:49:30 AM
Alright so this park was original owned by Chelsea and it was a payed park
and you needed to sign a waver as well as pads and so on and so on.
How ever it is now city owned and will be a free park to all. Not to sure how the
pad situation will be handled but the fact that its a cement park is pretty sick.

A few of us skaters, inlcuding myself, have already had the pleasure of skating this park.
For the most part its amazing, good flow, bowls, ledges, hips, the whole nine its got everything, but for being such a big park its really narrow so during the summer it should get crowded rather fast.

heres a few pics of the park. its said to open this year. look for more details online i guess.

I'm only mildly ashamed to say that place looks hard as fuck to skate.

It flows so gooooood though
starting from the top and skating down feels so amazing.
but  at the same time i cant imagine trying to do that
while theirs an entire city trying to skate it

considering there temporarily closing the Brooklyn banks for 4 years
and also closing flushing, as well as a few other big spots. >:(

it looks like one of those infinite staircase optical illusions where it's impossible to go all the way down or all the way to the top... is that what they were going for?

I prefer street, but it looks not terrible.

honestly, i don't see it getting super crowded. well, initially it will, but once the hype dies down, it will probably become like the park a few blocks north of it. it is too out of the way for most skaters and there is too much tranny. kids in nyc would rather skate the crappy les park than this one. and if it does get crowded, i am just going to plow through the madness anyway since most of the kids will probably just stick to the bottom right where those two ledges are. it may have its flaws, but it is better than any other park in the city.

when did you skate it? is there not a guard there 24/7 anymore? my main issue is that it has been done since the summer but they are waiting til spring to let anyone (other than the birdhouse team) skate it. it is such a waste. i also wonder if they are going to let bikes in it...that would be even more of a waste.

When are they closing the banks, and why?  I don't go down there to skate very often, but sometimes...

they were supposed to close a couple weeks ago, but are still open. they are closing them to use as a staging area for painting the brooklyn bridge. it is supposed to take like 5 years. seeing as how everything goes over schedule and is delayed in the city, we can probably expect them to take 7 to 8 years, imo. steve rodriguez is working with them to keep at least part of the banks open throughout, however.

5 years to paint a bridge?  Are they using paint pens or something?

The new eastern span of the bay bridge hasn't taken that long to build I don't think.

in nyc, unions make everything happen at a snails pace and for much more money. without most of them, the city would be a much more advanced place.

I love an awesome bank or 1/4 pipe...that is directly opposed by a wall.

so they finally opened this park today. i have to say, this place is pretty amazing. there were tons of people there today but it isn't too bad to handle the large volume. there are so many fun things to skate there and you can get so much speed. i am so stoked to have a place like this in the city to skate. it puts all the other parks in the city to shame. plus, they didn't make anyone have to wear pads today...though i hear that might have been just for today. there were turnstiles to get in, which mostly kept the bikers out. one somehow got his bike in, but he got vibed out pretty quickly. there were a ton of roller bladers though. they even outnumber the skaters toward the end. i ran into a few myself. regardless, i had so much fun and can't wait to skate it again (i skated it for 8 hours straight today)...unfortunately it is raining for the next two days.
