Title: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: Schmitty on March 05, 2008, 03:41:27 PM
I dont know, what do you guys think. Should we end the contest early and give the win to Bowserhound?

Any ideas for future contests, go ahead and PM me. I got a few ideas brewing for next month, but Im open to suggestions as well.

Sorry for getting carried away, I didn't think everyone would just quit suddenly.

I do suggest a cap of sorts.  You can only win one contest every 6 months or something, just to keep it fair.

Yeah, give it to Bowserhound,  dude deserves it.  He dominated that contest!!

online game of skate?

That's actually a good idea, but a logistical nightmare.

that's what i was thinking....
but maybe if you sit and think about it for a few minutes...

idk... just thowin stuff out there

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: Thee Gnartical Adventure on April 05, 2008, 03:17:15 AM
I GOT IT!

i sat and thought about it for a minute
so what if it was like,
"challenge one: do an ollie in a monkey outfit"
or something to that effect...
so it would still be pics, but like, challenges.......

so basically an international KOTR
yeah?

That would actually be pretty cool.

you could do something like "most handrails"  where whoever posts the most pics of them doing handrails wins.....

or like kickflips over stuff...whatever

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS

or taking pics of local great spots to skate.  extra points if there are multiple lines in the area.

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS

What is easier for you guys, to get a photo up or a video youtube clip.
I was thinking on the same lines as what you're talking about, but Im not sure how many people would be able to get a photo/video of themselves and put it up... Who thinks they could?

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: Rick bRo$$ on April 07, 2008, 08:30:47 AM
photos are easy to post.....
but i've never posted anything on youtube
I'd be up for that contest

Ok, well the first ten people to have a YouTube account and become friends with our ThrasherMagazine account are entered in the next contest. Spread the word once you're in. And if you don't skate, dont bother entering, you wont make it past the first round!

There's still plenty of room. I think we got like three or four people in so far. I'd like to see ten. I might post it in Junkdrawer tomorrow to see if that gets more attention.

The contest idea was to get some kids that know how to get  footage on to youtube and then the first ten kids to be friends with our Thrasher account would be entered in a video contest... I got like six so far. Either everyone is computer illiterate or no one on here actually skates...

True that. also, i think if you posted something in the junk drawer you'd get hits like no tomorrow cause this contest is kind of hidden, u need to be a member to see the contest section of the messageboard and then this thing is posted under future constests which is a little ambiguous

Start by letting the lurkers (they outnumber us) see the contest thread.  That will surely bring more members, then if it gets stagnant again, release the hounds/junk drawer/myspace/email blast.

how bout a DIY contest where whoever makes the best spot to benefit their fellow skaters wins

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: Tazdeviloo7 on June 03, 2008, 09:11:50 PM
Try setting up an online king of the road where you rack up points for doing set tricks along with highest, longest, most challenges and maybe some other random challenges. Of course, make it more simple and easier than the actual king of the road challenges. Advertise it for a while on the thrasher homepage and have a bigger prize, like $500 or free complete every month for half a year. Exclude pro and am skaters and give all the participants like a month or so to post up a youtube vid. Have somesort of qualifying round too.

I think this could work and I'd love to see a king of the web type contest. I think it would bring alot of publicity to your website if you could pull it off. Who knows these days, they made an hour long show on the discovery channel about an amateur video on youtube called "battle at kruger" that got 32 million views.

Now if there only more than 3 of you.....

...maybe the portion of the mag responsible for giving away stuff could start making a new product that would make the zits on Sheckler's face dissappear, it would be able to pay for the advertising it would take to make more than 5 people participate in said awesome contest.

How far should people go to give stuff away?

The next Black Label photo victim should be Hensley...or The Kid.  But there's probably a shit-ton of Flogging Molly pics out there too, so it would have to be skating only.

Hensley+Black Label Logo pic hunt.  Those should be tough to find.

Im thinking about a build the beautiful women thread or something, first person to make 100 posts of different hotties or the most at the end of the week or something... I got a bunch of ideas actually, but not sure if the boards are ready for em... I still really want to do the quiktime/youtube contest for dudes that shred. How many of you would be into a video contest of you skating?

I think it would have to be done OIAM style. Something that can catch the eye of any skateboarder. I really think that an Online King of the  Road would be the best way. Just put out a bunch of random  challenges that can be done in just about any setting.... i.e. 8 tricks on a eight stare, build a DIY spot, hug a cop etc. Limit the # of people on a team. This could lead to skate shops getting involved and what not....

you could really incorporate anything you wanted to.

KOTR style video contest ? ? ?

That would be dope. Have people film with their friends and skaters from their area, and complete the challenges provided. That might get a bunch of the people everybody films with to jump on here and see if they win. maybe like a fat t-shirt package for the win. Who knows ?

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS

a box of shirt with this...

would be a prize worth winning.

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: malinas on August 12, 2008, 04:20:14 PM
Yeah, like we should do a scavenger hunt around the city. Like skate a barrier, skate a pool, build a spot, etc.
and have like different awards like gnarliest fall, most creative, etc.
make it like a month long and get a bunch of hype and plan it and announce it a couple months before, so people can get ready.
a photo one would be sick too, more people could do that one.

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: Thee Gnartical Adventure on August 12, 2008, 05:55:56 PM
i have a feeling 'gnarliest fall' would lead to a bunch of kooks forcing a fall...... but at the same time that would be kind of funny. i like the scavenger hunt idea

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: bailgun on August 12, 2008, 06:55:46 PM
maybe a contest where you have to show the slams before the makes... then have winners for gnarlies slams, best trick, etc.

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: el ogrehound 3000 on August 12, 2008, 10:06:42 PM
I'm completely in favor of a King Of The Web contest.  Make a trick/prank book and have each worth some points, most points at the end of the month wins.  That way we can see some good skating, AND dudes making out with 60 year olds.

And of course there would have to be a entry based on each Swayze movie.

Roadhouse - 50pts. - walk into a bar and punch somebody or throw glass bottle at band behind chicken wire.

Red Dawn - The possibilities are endless.

Dirty Danson - 30pts.  - Go to skatepark in leotards and shred a 3 trick line.

Point Break - 20pts. -  "   "  but wearing a wetsuit yelling "Bro" at the top of your lungs.

Youngblood - 40pts. - shave pubes

This is fun...

How about a contest to write a Thrasher magazine style article with photographs about one local unsponsored skater?
It could talk a bit about their Bio, Then some skating achievements. It could be graded on professionalism and photography.

Not if you're going to rap about your homies.

Well my point was a professional style article. Does it matter if it's about a friend? As long as the photographic proof is there and the article is well written and believeable

Either way, I don't think too many people want to read about unsponsored skaters.
Good concept, but the content needs to be wanted.  Every skatepark is filled with the people you speak of.

If you could find a pro/am skater and get a DIY interview and some pics, then you may have something.

personally i like the scavenger hunt thing that malinas came up with or the best photo contest .  the contests that dont involve skating (photo hunts and other shit like that) seem stupid to me since i think the contests should promote going out and skating not sitting on your ass

DIY contest.

multiple prizes-

best spot, best trick, best use of environmental features, best overall... so much potential.

it would have to be the sort of thing with a pretty far off deadline for actual spot building, it could be really cool.

Actually I just had an Idea for a contest. Design a deck contest. I don't know which company would support it but design a deck aimed towards a certain company or skateboarder in particular.
That could be the advanced photoshop contest schmitty was talking about at the end of the gerwer contest. I wonder if they could get Anti-Hero to back that one too.

best trick on a natural (non-regularly skated) object.  rocks, trees, whatever.  rig it up.  but no curbs, banks, rails...etc.

or my personal fav, most useless trick.  making up shit.  no pre-established trick. no comply impossible tailgrab.  wallride finger flip.  ...ha everyting im thinking of starts with "no comply..."

Snap. I just got stoked 'cause I found this video that I made when I was like 12. I edited it with a TV that had a built in VCR. I connected the AV cables from the camera to the TV and I would edit it like that. Then I would take the tape with the makes and play it on another VCR that was connected to the TV and run the audio output to the TV from a Diskman so I could have music in the video.

I used to do some tricks that are way too sketchy for me to try now, like crook to back lip.

pic hunts are based on the company who provides the prize.  We had a pic hunt of louie as the prize was a complete Enjoi board.

Plus we already had many Black label pic hunts.

This months contest is a logo contest where the winner receives a complete skateboard and a year's subscription to the mag. Contest ends April 1st.
Moderator: Schmitty
Child Boards: PAST CONTESTS

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: cadetbradley on January 06, 2009, 08:51:42 PM
It probably wouldn't get too many entries, but how funny would it be to have a best caveman darkslide contest?

Remember the long jump that was in Thrasher?  There was a sequence of Brian Hansen jumping off one board over a shit ton of barrels onto another.  A contest of that would equal some good slams, but I also support the sketchiest needle thread idea because of its epicness.

You could even do the thing Ragdoll used to do, where you put your board at the bottom of a set of stairs (or gap or anything) and run and jump on it.

Just some random ideas.

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: elastic back on January 06, 2009, 09:39:40 PM
pass on the caveman darkslide.

the barrel jumping was for king of the road.

a skate ninja contest would not get many participants.

sketchy needle threading is cool, but it may not be easy to find sketchy spots that meet the criteria for most people.

Best hill bomb wins a Frank Gerwer or Dennis Busenitz board.

You would get kids in trouble but it would be cool to see how many skate stoppers you could collect.  Like have a vid showing all the ones on a ledge then show the ledge with them ripped off (to show they didnt order them...which I hope no one would ever do).

Best drop in 5050, as in drop in straight to 5050 on square park rails, ledges, curbs etc

boring.

if it isn't going to be skating it should at least be something that we can get creative with. photoshop contest are passable.

IM telling you, the problem with skate video contests is no one enters... Lets say we give a week for best 30 second montage of wallrides-who's in?

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: el ogrehound 3000 on January 14, 2009, 04:55:53 PM
video contests have to be a month long thing.  It could run congruently, but not soley.

1 week scavenger hunt with the answer being a 1 week photo hunt without being told the correct answer.

followed by a 2 week 'create a cover for Mindfield' photoshop contest.

And the video contest runs through all 4 weeks.

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: elastic back on January 15, 2009, 06:42:44 AM
i'm down for that. but a month is a long time to film for a mere 30 seconds on one type of terrain. how about at least a 60 second montage.

ps...photohunts and scavenger hunts are still boring...how about a photo scavenger hunt contest (not a best photo since photogs will win that one) where you have to find and photograph things that you have to look for in real life, not online.

for example, round one:
get a photo of someone doing a frontside wallride on a non-cemented barrier
get a photo of the kinkiest handrail you can find
get a photo of to people skating the same obstacle at the same time (doubles)
photo of someone doing a natural drop in
photo of your favorite non-blown out spot

these all have to be your own photos, not ones grabbed off the internet, if it is found out that they were, you are disqualified. perhaps the things get harder for each round (1 or 2 rounds a week). instead of each thing revealing a clue, it just helps keep you in the game. only the people that complete each round get to move on to the next round. the last round can be judged based on quality (of spots, tricks, effort, etc.) with the winner(s) being chosen by thrasher. the benefit of this is that not only do a lot of people have a chance to enter, but nobody is going to be able to get a head and discourage all others, like the photo hunts do, for the first round. AND it is something that would be worth following along as a viewer, even if you aren't playing or didn't advance a round (unlike the photo hunts, sure they get a lot of posts, but they don't get very many page views outside of from the contestants themselves).

Im telling you, we got to keep shit more simple. That's why the photo hunts work. Its easy for everyone to find photos of one dude and plaster em up on the site... Im down to try and get another video contest going too though... But for today, I think we gonna go with yet another PHOTO HUNT contest... Who and what time it will start, still to be determined...

Title: Re: FUTURE CONTESTS
Post by: elastic back on January 15, 2009, 09:32:25 AM
people would enter, you just have to promote it on more than just junk drawer. promote it on slap, on skatedaily, on the 'tap. if you plan one accordingly, you can even put something in the mag about it, in place of those giveaways for joining the mailing list or whatever. you have a whole page talking about winning a fred gall deck and some indies if you join the mailing list. at the very least, sent out something to that mailing list telling them to enter.

btw, bailgun, that spot that freddie is skating on the page i am talking about in the mag is the spot i was telling you jerry made and lost his board in the river on the other side doing the same trick. the photo doesn't do the spot justice, but footage would.

30 seconds with t-eddy style awards. That way everyone can enter and possibly win something, even a sticker pack. Not like "douchy McGee - whoever", more like "best use of a random piece of plywood - whoever"

Damn, do the mindfield cover!!!  I'm not great at photoshop but I like to do shit that I can at least try and get creative with.

If you run a logo contest along with it, I don't see why anyone on this message board can't enter.  You don't have to be good at photoshop or illustrator or anything.  Just fuckin use PAINT.  Just get a stencil or template or whatever of what you want the contest to do be of and then everyone saves it and works on it.

Or give everyone a blank shirt and let them slap whatever they want on it as long as it says thrasher.

I think winter is a great time for contests like these, where as the other months are better for skate contests probably cause more people will go out, instead of more people staying inside where they could make mindfield covers  ;D

I don't ever see me entering a photo hunt cause I know there's going to be someone on the internet way longer than me scavenging (which they deserve to win then) so if it's a week long contest and I go do shit a few days then I feel like I'm not gonna have much of a chance.  With the creative stuff, it's not like that.  As long as you have one day to put effort into it you'll have a chance.

I am new here, and I d43finitely didn't rread all 16 pages of responses so I apologize if this has been mentioned...\

But with the whole  vid thing and being able to try it  over and over for ever just be cause 1 or 2 mighty pop perfect or even get lucky.

That said, I thinkIt'd be a good idea to do a vid contest of who can do a trick the most consecutively, unedited  :P :P

all 1 shot. Just get someone to film you, keep yourself in frame the whole time ( in case for stunt devils lol) and demonstrate your skill by seeing how many consecutive 'whatevers'. ollies or 180s I think would be nad choices sine they don't ever leave your feet.  But kickflip , f/s shuvs, b/s shuvs, heelflips, tre flips (pushing it :) )

Another dif idea: triple kickflips, or however many flips 1 can get on flatground, and if they flisp are even, then comes style..? :)

Just some thoughtys
