Title: the injury thread.
Post by: bailgun on November 12, 2010, 09:41:33 AM
post up in here if you're currently off your board from an injury. complain, whine, share rehab tips, support, etc.

i just got word from my doctor that i'll be out for at least a month due to a pinched nerve in my neck that's causing the whole left side of my body to act all fucky.

That must be a pretty bad pinched nerve. Rolled my ankle a little bit yesterday, not too bad but gives me an excuse to play black ops all day lol.

How about chronic, skate-related conditions which don't get better?  My pushing foot is coming apart inside.  My neck has had what feels like an out-of-place disc for about ten years from a reverse scorpion wreck.  Don't do those.

I'm still skating, but presently I've got three: sprained left ankle, bad back that got extra bad in a car accident a month ago, and the right shoulder needs surgery.

shit guys. i hope you all get well soon. none of those sound good.  i'm still skating too, but have been plagued with a wrist injury. whaaa whaaa whaaa!  i also have cement mixer joints and old injuries that never healed properly which nag from time to time.

good diet and stretching are probably the best/quickest way to heal. unfortunately, i didn't listen to my own advice until i got older.

I've done this to myself three times in 6 months

Popped back in once by the doc, and twice by me. been just about 2 years since the last one, but I can still feel it.

permanent bad wrists too, I threw out my right one last nite in a foozball game  :D

^ Is that your elbow? Looks painful.

I’ve got a degenerative hip problem, which basically means I’m in agony if I try to ollie. I’ve had it my whole life some days are better then others, I just know if I go overboard one day of ollieing equals two weeks of therapy.

I was also on disability for 6 months with a back injury and still suffer back problems everyday.
This (http://www.theracane.com/) helps
(http://www.theracane.com/images/model_small2.jpg)
(couldn’t pass up the camel toe)

Heard a lot of good things about pool therapy so I might give it a try for all of my aches and pains.

Ankles are the worst. I sprained mine in October and it's still not 100%. My advice is to ice it every day and take 4 ibuoprofen tablets (800mg) every 8 hours. That's more than the packaging recommends but what the doctors tell me to do whenever I have any injury involving swelling. Ice and Advil will take the swelling out really quick and help with the pain so you can move your foot again, but they won't actually help heal the joint. Try to stay off of it as best you can for that. If you rush back into things like I did it will take longer to heal, but I got to a point where not skating sucked worse than the pain skating caused, so I can't blame you if you get the itch, too. I recommend wearing high top shoes after you get off the ankle injury, because ankle sprains beget more ankle sprains, and the support is much needed. Mid tops didn't do me too much good. I had to wear a pair of shoes that completely covered the ball of the ankle after I got off the injury. Low tops definitely couldn't cut it. I felt like I was going to break my ankle just pushing down the street in low shoes.

My friend always uses Arnica (http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/arnica-000222.htm) salve when he rolls his ankel.  I've used those giant physical therapy rubber bands on mine for years, to help stretch and strengthen the joints, and recommend them.

Can't wait for my new shoes to arrive.  My pushing foot is fucked up and they'll help in the short term.  It doesn't hurt so much really, but something (http://orthopedics.about.com/od/toeproblems/p/turftoe.htm) is definitely not right, and probably isn't going to get right anytime soon.

i have a few orbital bone fractures.  i just have to wait for them to heal. ton's of advil, and i finished of my percocet Rx the other day.

for ankles, i recommend spelling the alphabet out with your foot.

Title: Re: the injury thread.
Post by: Hefeweizen on February 17, 2011, 07:03:28 PM
Whenever I roll my ankle I always do 15-20 minutes in a bucket of ice water, 15-20 out with some tiger balm (about 5 times). I swear up and down that this shortens healing time. Sometimes I even do it again the next day.

My rap sheet, BTW:
Broken leg - tibia and fibula, spiral fracture, 2 clean breaks, 3 fucked up cracks.
Broken collar bone - sucks super bad because nobody knows you're injured and claps you on the shoulder.
Ankle that basically rolls itself without me rolling it. It just feels like I sprained it from nothing sometimes.
Wrists that haven't really healed for the last 7 or so years.

feet are the worst thing to damage period. Atleast you can support your ankle but with my broken foot i cant even push, it sucks. I have broke part of my foot and cant even stand up without being in really bad pain, worst thing when you cant skate few over a week!

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a concussion without damaging your head?

I think I received a mild form just yesterday.  It was a cold dark evening when me and my friends were skating in this park near this high school. And we were just messing around, trying tricks we don't usually do.  To cut the story short,
one of my friends a landed nollie bigspin and I tried to do a fakie bigspin, almost landed it on the first couple of attempts. When I tried again, I landed it, shot out backwards, and instinctively landed on my hands (feeling the shock of the impact rush to my head). Now, I would usually get up and dust myself off, but I felt confused and dizzy as I was trying to pick myself up. Once I finally got up, I felt fine but once I started driving I started getting headaches and felt dizzy again. As I got home, I drank water and the headache/dizziness went away...

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a concussion without damaging your head?

From personal experience, I can tell you this is possible.  I grew up in the mountains, and was super into snowboarding during the winter in high school/college.  I spent a lot of time in the backcountry building big jumps into powder landings, and got a couple pretty nasty concussions from dropping out of a trick into a bombhole, getting nailed in the chest with my knees and exploding.  My head didn't hit anything, but my brain definitely still got bounced around in there from the impact.  Week long headaches, nasuea and a ringing in my ears.  Good times.

On a more positive note, between the new shoes and taping up my toes good, I feel I'm minimizing the unrightness going on in my foot lately.

After reading articles and ttching's post I just found out it is possible, and I did get a concussion.
A "Grade 1" concussion. Last time I remember getting a concussion, it was when I was playing peewee football and I tackled a guy.

Hurt my pushing(Right) ankle a few days ago trying to front feeble a down rail, missed my truck and landed in an awkward off balance front board. Shot me to the bottom. Landed with my front foot off, but my right ankle on the ground with my toes still on the board. Got a jolt of pain through my ankle and it's been sore since. I've just been taking it easy and keeping a brace on tight.

This weekend I was treated to pretty much the worst case of road rash on the palms of my hands that I've ever had.  Since hands are neigh impossible to keep a bandage on, I'm using Newskin on them.  Putting that stuff on hurts worse than scraping the skin off did, and it makes the wounds look super hideous, but its the only way to go.

I thought super-glue was for gash type injuries, like to glue the flap of skin back down in lieu of stitches.  I'm a little skeptical about using it where there are just big raw patches where the skin is gone, but I'm open to trying it next time if you think its a better way to go.  I'll spare you guys a picture of the carnage.  I showed my work buddy Jake for fun and he ran away.

This liquid bandage stuff seems to be helping a lot.  I'm hoping this helps toughen my hands for all the action over the next eight months.  My palms might have taken the brunt of the damage, but the rest of my hands got roughed up too.

Oh yea! This thread needs more pics. Is there already a hall of meat thread? I'll post my back melter from a couple summers ago later.

I was hoping to steer clear of this thread but my number got called yesterday.  Tweaked my ankle pretty good..

Luckily it's not too bad, been icing it and taking anti-inflammitory/painkillers. Walking isn't fun but I can get myself around and put pressure on it.  I was on a good streak too, before this I hadn't had a debilitating injury since Dec 09. Oh well, as they say:  'If you're not hurt, you're not trying.' (or something like that)

Well, I don't have much experience with prison rape, but I disagree. I feel like the more I've rolled my ankles, the easier they become to roll again, and it still bothers me just as much if not more than the first time. There is no such thing as getting used to rolling an ankle.

it all depends from body to body because we are not the same...
for me personally if i rolled it bad of course it's going to give me a hard time but on the other side there was a bunch of time that i sprained it like on flatground tricks and i thought it was fucked but the very next day i would go
out and skate like nothing happened,so i get used to that shit but again it all depends from body to body

I almost separated my shoulder Saturday night. I was too drunk to even ride my bicycle (you can get a DUI on a bike but I love riding dirty). i have to train  my left leg muscles up now cuz my knee plays up allot skating and the muscle tissue in my left leg is non-existant.

I feel your pain homie. Busted my shit in January and I'm now just starting to push around again. Some friendly advice, move your toes and ankle (if at all possible) as often as you can. When you start walking again it'll help.

I rolled the shit out of my ankle the other day attempting a half-assed boardslide.  I was pretty much done for the day, just skating around and in retrospect wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing at all, over rotated, slid off and landed with my foot sideways sans board.

I had my headphones on with some pretty loud music and I still heard the snap/ripping sound, saw the bottom of my fucking shoe and thought for sure that I would be going to the hospital/hanging it up for awhile.

I am impressed with how well the following worked for me:
1.  Stopped skating right away.
2.  Rushed home and focused on keeping the swelling down with Ibuprofen, ice, elevation and a compression wrap.
I am no stranger to injuries and apparently most of the damage done with a sprain comes from tissue damage
caused by swelling and not taking measures to stop it as soon as possible.
3.  Iced it for 15 minutes every few hours the next day, kept up with the Ibuprofen and started doing the range of
     motion ABCs.

I realize the above sounds a little like overkill but shit hit the fan on Tuesday and I was back on my board Thursday with barely noticeable swelling, full range of motion and no pain so I am really happy that it worked.

Post by: dtotherob on July 15, 2011, 05:28:31 PM
i don't think that it's overkill.  i usually do the same. i rolled mine a couple weeks back and finally had a good session on it last night. i destroyed my big toe on the other foot the same day i wrecked my ankle. it's sill sore but i can deal with it.

unfortunately i didn't get as much rest as i would have liked. i walk about 20kms a day for work but i think it helped it along anyways.

Toe injuries are always pretty lame since there isn't a whole lot that you can do except deal with them.  I have definitely learned to do whatever I can to nurse certain injuries right away.  It's surprising how much trying to push through some things can make them so much worse.  Maybe it's just a matter of luck, but I have rolled my ankle before in what seemed to be a lot less severe of a case so I skipped the first aid and ended up on crutches the next day.

Putting 20K on a rolled ankle can't be fun, you might want to invest in one of those  Rascal motorized carts or a Segway for such occasions.  Dignity be damned.

Rolled my ankle pretty good while warming up the day my friend and I decided we were going to film some quick clips at the Zootown park.  Fortunately, it got a little tweaked everywhere, instead of a lot of tweaked in one area.  Homie talked me into filming a clip anyway, and I'm psyched I did.  Its wasn't as tech of a line as I would have tried otherwise, but I got the last trick exactly the way I wanted to for the first time all weekend.  Some nice purple hues going on now, but it seems mostly ok pain/flexiblity wise.  Should be skating again by Saturday.

Looks like Karma caught up with me for my snarky comments in this thread.  I managed to roll the other ankle yesterday which is about a month and a half after the last roll I posted in here.  Fortunately, this one was more tweak and less roll.

I might look into getting some mid or high tops.  It might be just dumb luck but I can’t think of an instance when I have ever rolled my ankle in a pair of Chuck Taylors which are the only non-low tops shoes I have ever skated in.

My left knee is finally healing a bit. I had bone bruises from last October, then they got better, so I did it again this September! I rolled my ankle the other night skating some banks at the police station here in Vancouver, but because there are no parts left in there, it was fine the next day. Today a smacked my knees on some concrete and they each have a neat little bump sticking out of them.

My best friend and the dude who I always skate with has been suffering with a knee problem for the past few years. It was getting worse and worse over over time, but he kept on skating until he finally fucked it up so bad that he had no chance but to get it fixed. He ended up having to replace his right acl, fix the mcl, and repair some jacked up cartilage in the knee. He was laid up at his mom's house for 2 months after the surgery unable to move/walk, but he's back at home/work now, walking with one crutch, and he should be driving again in a week or two. He swears with all of is heart and soul that he WILL skate again in 2013. I really hope that he can.

Good luck with your surgery...Hopefully you'll make a speedy recovery.

I don't know man...I've been pretty lucky in the sense that I haven't had any serious/life altering injuries, but I'm constantly nursing smaller, nagging shit. Hips, knees, ankles, elbows, wrists...even my neck is jacked up. The funny thing is that if I'm feeling really sore and I'm concerned about skating, I usually feel a lot better after I do.

We should have a contest..."Which forum member has the ugliest shins?"

currently sat with my 5th broken wrist after trying to bank to bank pop shuvit a large driveway at a skatepark near my home.

apparently a small amount of alcohol does great things for your confidence unfortunately it did not make me "fall like a drunk". instead i stomped my feet down to stick the landing and all of a sudden i was superman-ing down the other side on to flat concrete.

dislocated and broken at the same time so it needed an injection, a hell of a lot of nitrous oxide and 3 people to pull my wrist apart to uncompact it so that it would heal in the right place. luckily after MRI no surgery was needed.

cast of next thursday so im nearly bursting with excitement/desperation to get back on board.
