"Heaven for climate. Hell for company."

« on: July 01, 2011, 10:46:11 AM »

I used to rag on baseball players because watching a game can feel like observing a psyche ward or methadone clinic with all the goofy twitching, grabbing and adjusting going.  I have realized that there is similar quirky behavior in the skating world.  There are plenty of dudes that get a little OCD when skating.  I think it just has to do with focusing your thoughts on telling your body what to do and trying to distract it a little to calm your nerves.  I am guilty of at least the following:

1) When I am working on a trick, I have this weird gauntlet that I have to navigate before changing tricks.  If it’s something that I can barely do then I have to pull it 5 times (sketchy is allowed) before moving on to something else.  If it’s something I can pull fairly consistently then I have to land it 10 times clean before I can do anything else.  If it’s something that I have down than I have to land it 20 times clean, usually in two batches of 10 before calling it a good.

2)When I try something completely new then I apply the above logic to aspects of the trick.  I try to break the trick down into parts and pull parts of it before I can change it up.

3)When skating anything that involves coping I prefer to knock out ten 50-50s before anything else goes down.

4)Unless I got fucked up I can’t leave on a bail.  I have to land something and it has to feel good before calling it a day.

I always thought this was ironic with the whole freedom to do whatever the hell you want, no rules, and flow as you go style of skateboarding.  When I skate with friends I usually just do this shit without them noticing but I am keeping a tally of what I have done in my head.  They’ll be ready to go and I am just like “hold on man I want to knock out a few more blah-blah-blahs” because I have to make my quota.
What OCD/superstitious type shit do you have going on?

haha too quirky.

I always wear my hat/beanie.(Yes, I'm one of those guys that would wear beanies in 90+ degree weather)
Whenever I'm doing a line and my hat/beanie flies off, start over.
If my hat/beanie flies off during mid trick I would automatically bail.
Silly? Yes. I just feel really weird without my hat/beanie on my head. Undecided

it's not really a pre-trick quirk that i have, i always do it after/mid bail. but according to my friends i let out a wierd kind of yelp that , as one of them described, can only be likened to a sound a yeti would make if it were caught off guard or surprised

Stabby, I'm the same with your #4. I always say to myself "One perfect_____, and I'm done."

And I tap my tail before really going for a trick that I want to get.

I have a friend that does the "hold the two front wheels and tweak the front truck, while simultaneously giving the back truck a tweak with my right heel" thing similar to what PRod does.

When trying a trick I always re-adjust my hat, taking it off and throwing my hair back into it before every try. Even it really needs no adjusting. I have a couple other little weird ones that I cant really think of that are more subconcious that I catch myself doing sometimes. Whenever I'm in a car there are certain numbers that I don't like the volume to be on.

I always flip my board over and look at it when things aren't going my way. It took some kid to call me out on it before I noticed that it was something that I do. I don't know, it just clears my mind, and if all of my wheels aren't still spinning then it breaks my train of thought. I ride Swiss so my wheels spin for a while after I pick my board up.

I heard JT Aultz is the worst
