Phil was a good friend of mine since about 1990. He was simply the best, nothing I can say really gives the dude justice. He rode for Think Skateboards, he was thought of as the future editor-wise here at Thrasher. He died in a car accident on a trip up North on August 23rd of 1998. The dude was always having fun, always down to skate and I mean everything and anything. He wanted to start his own company and have ACDC for his part. Those are just things that come to my crusty mind right now, but I'm sure later, I'll edit it and add more. People often ask me how I got a job at Thrasher, a lot of things fell into place at the right time for me; one of the biggest was meeting Phil Shao. I will never forget you Phil!
I'm in the middle of making a semi-documentary, at least of the years I knew Phil with interviews of his friends and peers with all the footage I can get a hold of (most was filmed by either myself of Mark Whiteley); I hope to have it done soon... Here's the trailer:

I'm grabbing my Damage Video and putting Phil's part on the web ASAP. He was raw skating man. Still amazing
how much of an effect he still has on all of us. Rest in Peace Phil.

I believe it was Damage where Phil Shao did a line at St. Louis's Keiner Plaza with a switch back tail on the ledges.     I know all of us back then were so stoked that Think came through with a demo and then a year later we'd learned that they'd filmed stuff in our town.    It was so different back then when no one ever came to St. Louis to film.   Phil is one of my all time favorite skateboarders.  R.I.P.

Here's a link to a Phil Shao fanpage on Facebook, if you're into that type of thing...
