Does anyone else feel that GT dicked so many other better candidates for SOTY out of the title? For me it was Nyjah, and not to suck him off like everyone does so much recently, but because his video part was ACTUALLY groundbreaking. GT put out a part that Chet Childress would have bested five years ago, didn't get near the same coverage, and all around didn't push skateboarding forward like Nyjah did. I wouldn't even mind someone like Torey Pudwill or Shane O'Neill receiving the award because again, they've actually done things within the skateboarding community...is there something I'm not understanding? GT is so sick but I legitimately don't feel like he deserved SOTY this year over so many others, call me a hater. I feel like I could be overlooking something...

i was unaware that robots were now able to smith 24 stair rails....backside and frontside airs do not constitute "killing it"

Yeah you are missing something... The concept of what "doing something for skateboarding" actually means.

Nyjah didn't do shit for skateboarding, he just added 2 or 3 stairs length to the same rail tricks that have been getting done for years, and a few new ones. He also sucked some of the style that matters so much in skateboarding straight out. Why would Shane O'Neil possibly get Thrasher SOTY after talking shit about KOTR. Also, he didn't bring anything new to the table either, unless you count doing some difficult yet styleless and boring to watch ledge tricks doing something amazing for skating.

Pudwill I will agree had a good year, but not a SOTY year.

Grant had the part that just came out for SOTY (fast as shit, super stylish, skated everything, and in a very original manner... now THAT is doing something for skateboarding) along with all the skate rock stuff and other coverage he got, the interview in thrasher which had some damn amazing photos, and I'm sure they also had already seen his SB Chronicles part and factored that in.

PS: Chet would have bested that part? I love Chet but Chet would not have been doing the street shit Grant threw down...

Backside and Frontside airs the height and style of GTs more than constitute killing it...

I guess what I don't get it how Nyjah doesn't have style...he's got tricks flawlessly and every trick in the book. He reminds me of Chris Cole in that sense. Granted Childress couldn't hit the street stuff GT does, nevertheless the only part GT put out this year in the same time frame as SOTY WAS his SOTY part...and THEN his Nike SB part. Torey Pudwill has worse style than O'Neill, and yes I did miss the part of Shane talking shit about KOTR, that's fucked up plain and simple. That said, Grant's entire part essentially was pool skating and transition. What are we stuck in the 1990's? I mean he rips it up, but doing gnarly 5050's even through kinks hardly compares with the other material put out this year and even years past. I should still emphasize I love Grant's skating, for example in Debacle and Mind Field, but that being said he should have won it last year not this year. I don't think his SOTY part compared to those parts at all.

How can anything pool skating related possibly be original? And by the same token, GT's only increasing the height of airs is no different from adding stairs to a grind. No matter where you go a pool will be a pool and the obstacles can't stray at all away from the generic template...ladders, love seats, shallow ends, deep ends...I'm running out of options. I respect he's still repping a somewhat lost side of skateboarding,  but come at least step it up hard for your SOTY vid.

No No No No No! What Grant Taylor does is different then how other people skate. Nyjah is better at doing hard trick on huge shit than anybody else right now, but there will soon be someone that will surpass him in that ability, and since he has not yet established anything unique in his skateboard style, he is less deserving of SOTY. Grant was my second to Busenitz. Either of them skate unlike all others.

Tyler, You seem like a smart(ish) kid.
I say kid because you put a full name as your alias.

To help clarify for everyone,
How old are you?
and how long have you been skating?

yeah, hes smith grinding ten thousand set handrails, but that doesnt mean hes not a fucking robot. hes a robot due to his lack of style, it doesnt look like hes ever had fun on a skateboard (just watch his face), and im gonna say for the most part anyone whos a street league skater is a robot... theres a few exceptions of course... coles nosegrind to ollie north to both feet in the middle? fantastic. would nyjahbot do that? does not compute

Hahaha! I think it's funny that I read half of the first sentence and correctly predicted three of the names that were going to appear in your post; Nyjah, Shane, and Pudwill. I WAS surprised not to see mike mo or cory kennedy in your list. But, yeah what everyone else already said. if you stick with it long enough you'll realize what style is, if not than it wouldn't surprise me.

PS grant kills it, but im still waiting for the busenitz year...

that right there speaks volumes about how much you don't know about skateboarding.

Grant killed it all year! This thread is ridiculous, there shouldn't even be a need to argue that. Grant was my favorite for SOTY along with Busenitz and Westgate. To say Grant's skating is unoriginal shows that your opinion is invalid.

Totally missing the point, dude. You're looking at this like you built a goddamn excel spreadsheet and did the math on the simple statistics of Nyjah's tricks this year (COLUMN A MY ASS). Grant Taylor is pure fucking ripping. He's fucking possessed. Look at what he does when he skates. Destroys. Fucking. Everything. You are overlooking something. SOTY is given to a skater that made a mark and embodies what Thrasher is all about. Cards. Would you deny Cardiel's SOTY trophy or constant accolades? You don't think someone accomplished more technical street skating the year Cards won SOTY? Do you understand why Cards won SOTY? This isn't baseball. If you can't see this side of things you are in the wrong "sport", sport.
