I read a really good interview with him (that he apparently did with himself) a little while back. dude is a genius. and not just with music.

tom waits interview

Q: What's the most curious record in your collection?
A: In the seventies a record company in LA issued a record called "The best of Marcel Marceau." It had forty minutes of silence followed by applause and it sold really well. I like to put it on for company. It really bothers me, though, when people talk through it.

I saw him here in Phoenix back in June. Seriously the best show I've ever been to. His band is amazing as is his energy. He had the stage set up with him standing on top of a platform of worn looking 2x4's with inch or so gaps that would spew out dust as he stomped his legs to the beat, creating a cloud around the stage. Then using what looked like an old school or fire bell mounted at the edge of his platform with a hammer footpedal, to help out the percussion with a little more awesome towards the end half of the show. For the last few numbers, he changes his bowler hat, to another bowler but with a bunch of tiny mirrors glued around it and directs the spotlight onto his head. As he performs, beams of light are shooting all throughout the theatre.

Before the show, I bought a few shirts he made of oil stains he took pictures of in parking lots that resembled things. One looked like a tree, another a man holding someone up by gunpoint and a bug like splat. On the back, he lists which parking lot he took the picture at and when. I got a pamphlet of that True Confessions interview he did with himself too.

I tried to get tickets to both shows he was going to play here, but they both sold out in minutes. I was lucky to get the ticket I did. If you have an opportunity to go see this man live, fuckin do it. I really hope he comes back to Az.
