Joe Lopes was a great friend to all who knew him, and is missed by us all. A one-of-a-kind person, and incredible skater. He died in a car accident in 2002, leaving his wife and 5 children, and his parents (the coolest most supportive skate family I have ever met) behind.

His contribution to skateboarding was greater than many, at a time when skateboarding was all but forgotten to the rest of the world.

He hosted the first ever pro "jam" format contest at his backyard ramp in San Leandro in 1983. He had several pro model boards as one of the earliest team members of Schmitt Stix.

A recent Facebook page memorializing him has come up, and I wanted to be sure he was noted here at Thrasher, where he got his first coverage.

RIP brother.

Thanks Ffej! I never got to go to Joe's but I met him a few times. He was considered the master of the BBQ by most when I was growing up. More photos would be awesome!

I remember seeing shots of him in the mags when I was a kid.  Was really into his skating.

RIP
