Anyone out there skate with an ankle brace?  Something like this:  http://pro-tec.net/skate/ankle_brace.html

Being 35 yrs old, I need all the help I can get to stay out there.  I'm laid up right now with an ankle injury so I need to do something or I'm fucked.

I'm looking for someone that has used or used one to see if this one is the best option that will still give me enough movement for flip tricks and such.

That thing looks pretty nice.  I wish they had those when I was in high school spraining my ankle every other week.

i sprained my ankle 2 and a half months ago, the same one i always fuck up so it was pretty bad. yeah i ve been wearing this one i got at walgreens it has plastic protection on the sides. i just try not to over tighten it, but it does help you feel more protected, especially when your ankle feels weak. now i feel like i may never skate without one

get a bicycle and ride it. write the alphabet with your foot in the air. go swimming. only wear a brace when its absolutely necessary. wearing a brace makes your body depend on that brace and will eventually cause that particular body part to get even weaker.

do some rehab, and fuck braces.

Yeah I used one of those when My ligaments were fucked up. It's a shitty feeling, because the thing I had wouldn't let me move properly, so techy shit was out out the question, It was bowl or stomped tricks.

bail's right.  Unless you absolutely cannot walk without one don't use it.  The second you can walk without it stop using the brace.  Braces prevent the injured ankle from building up strength and stability.

If you can't walk without it you probably shouldn't be skating yet.

Full recovery is not achieved just because there is no pain.   Wink

Well, the fact of the matter is that we will all sprain our ankles and part of the rehab is compression and keeping it safe while it's injured. For that purpose, those braces are perfect. And if you're not 100% and you want to get a light session in, it's better than re-injuring it bailing on something.

What if you exercise your ankle and wear the brace?

no. ask any doctor. wearing a brace all the time is a BAD idea.

rehab and time OFF your skateboard are really the only options. relying on a brace will only cause problems down the road.

just accept the fact that you're in your thirties now.

And part of rehab is compression that is provided by the brace. And how many skaters do you know that wait till they're fully healed to skate again? There's no room for nuance here? Braces are a good thing if you use them right.

after 30, nuance goes out the window. injuries happen easier, and take forever to heal.

better to have one day where you're 100% than ten days of 10%.
