Man arrested after fatally stabbing musician at Bloomington house party

Murder suspect Brian White

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) - A murder suspect used a Bloomington man's home as a hideaway.

Bloomington Police say the suspect had just fatally stabbed a musician who had just performed at a house party.

Police say the suspect tried to run and hide but a helpful homeowner pointed police in the right direction.

When Jeremy Durham came home from the store, his usually friendly dog, Gilmore, was guarding the back door ready to pounce on a stranger.

"I looked down the kitchen and seen some guy staring back," Durham said.

Bloomington Police say that guy was 32-year old Brian White who had just stabbed 32-year old Christopher Johnson in the chest.

Johnson was the lead singer for The Useless Wooden Toys and had just performed at a party in a house just around the corner from Durham's home.

Police say White and Johnson got into a fist fight after White grabbed a woman then the two separated.

Police say White and Johnson started fighting again in the back yard. That's when White stabbed Johnson in the chest. Witnesses say that White walked away with a folded knife in his hand.

Durham says White ended up on his back porch, "I think the dog kept him from coming in for sure.

"

Durham shouted at him to leave and called 911.

"He just said he needed help and sanctuary," Durham said.

But White didn't go far, police later found him hiding in a temporary sanctuary in Durham's cellar with a piece of tin covering the opening.

"He was right underneath me the whole time," Durham said.

Police said White asked detectives to pray for him when they took him into custody.

Johnson's band, The Useless Wooden Toys, is from Minnesota. They were scheduled to have another performance Sunday night in South Bend.

Brian White faces murder charges.
