John Mayer slays at guitar.  I think he's got a case of the Jimi Hendrix disease though, he has a love for music above humanity and it's made him kind of a jerk.

Since I dont know you im not gonna judge (that hard), but I am gonna go ahead and say you dont play an instrument. If you knew music at all, you would have noticed that he took that song to a different level. And I dont give a fuck if any of you bash on The Mommas and Pappas. They were a sick band from back in the day.
Personally I think that music is music. Everyone that plays an instrument is having fun (a lot like people who emjoy skateboarding), and they dont deserve to be bashed on. Especially someone like John Mayer, who rips on a guitar way harder than anyone on this message board. Which basically means you cant say shit).

I'm not bashing John Mayer but come on, the guy has built his career on bubble-gum pop songs and top-20 radio hits, why should I respect him just because he can play fast guitar solos?
one thing I've noticed about classic rock fans is that they hold obnoxious guitar solos as the pinnacle of artistic achievement, sorry but I'll never really understand that, this song sounds like any other thing I'd expect to hear on my parent's radio station

I think your problem is that you're just as guilty with your judgmental view of music. I've listened to some of his work and it didn't move me. Sure the dude is good at guitar, that's a no shitter. But his style is nothing that hasn't been done over and over again from classic rock and shitty white boy blues bands. You can definitely hear his Jimi and SRV influence in his playing which is cool if that's all you want to hear, which is why I'm sure he got popular. People are comfortable with that type of music; It's what they've grown to know. But imitation is not creativity, which is where I feel his music is at. I like to listen to progression (no I do not mean shitty moog/synth bands).

But that's cool if the guitar playing does it for you. To me, solo's and adding 9th and 7th hammers to chords does not make someone a creative genius or god at guitar. It doesn't matter how fast your fingers move when it comes to good music. Neil Young's one note solos come to mind.

Just remember not everyone gets their kicks or judges their music by slaying solo's or hand numbing chords. And it doesn't matter if you play an instrument or not. We are all spectators when it comes to music. Enjoy it.
