I probably would've never have started skateboarding if it wasn't for those Tony Hawk video games.

bailgun stop being a hater everyone starting skateboarding thinks like a kook at first.
Most of them quit after a year or shorter after they eat some shit and see how hard it is!
The rest skate for years a few of them remain kooks and still skate.

I started skating for the lamest reason in the whole world but after a year i found out what skateboarding was about,at least for me! A fun way to stay young in mind in a world of people with conservative and aged minds!!

Ya, it's kidna weird but...

The cups are from Carls Jr. of which they have cross promotion going on. Carls Jr. gives a good amount of money to Safe Spot Skate Spots which is part of Dyrdek’s Skate Plaza Foundation. In return, Dyrdek lets them obviously put pictures of himself on cups and whatever. Legit in my book, money for legit skateparks has to come from somewhere..

the more kids see it and think its cool, the longer skateboarding stays alive and progresses.im from alaska originally.none of this corporite shit made it up here.thats why there were so little skaters when i started.it was nice to not be mainstream, but it also meant that we were not accepted and having places to skate and not get kicked out really sucked.i say take the corporate machine for all that its worth and enjoy the f ing money.also carls junior has some awesome burgers.sponsor me so i can eat for free.hell yeah.

"Suit saved my life"? Wreaks of viral marketing. As for Dyrdek, dudes just a part of the machine trying to capitalize on skating while its hot. He'll make his money and maybe some skate parks will be made out of it.

Why do kids need some pop culture influence to start skating? I started because I got a skate for christmas, I just skated  by myself until about the mid-90's and shit blew up and everyone was skating in my town.

My parents would just buy me video games at the time, they weren't buying me "toys" per se.

i think that in a true sense skateboarding is anything but mainstream. of course you've got the few guys making it more mainstream  and a couple companies here and there doing the same but skateboarding itself is still considered radical. it has progressed more towards the liking of society, cuz we've got cities and towns building skateparks. but if you mention to someone that you skateboard, especially if you're older than 16, 95% of the time you'll get an awkward response

OK well what would you rather do, continue to try and push a pro skateboarding career knowing there are kids half your age who are four times as good as you and you are past your prime, or go on TV and do basically whatever the fuck you want and become rich. people think he is funny so they gave him a TV show, people liked it, so they gave him a happy meal

I think Rob and Tony both know theyre getting old.  EVERYONE will stop skating eventually. They have to look out for their future. You think they want to get a real job after doing nothing but skating their whole lives ?

In what true sense?  Street skaters?  There are several video games that any fat kid can play on his couch all day long.  So everybody knows about street skating.  There is nothing underground about it.

but skateboarding itself is still considered radical.
By who?  All the old folks are hippies that were tripping before your parents were married.  What have they got to be shocked about?  They invented radical.

Maybe the awkward response you are getting from older-than-16-years-olds is the response that questions why anyone would think that skateboarding is radical.

It is just another sport like tennis or bike riding.  What is wrong with that anyway?
I consider skateboarding something like music almost. There's way too much creativity and personal style involved in skateboarding that it can't be considered a sport. You can come up with new things that have never been done before, similar to alot of art forms. Whereas in sports, the only new thing you can do is just break a previous world record, theres no room for innovation or creativity. There's definitely an athletic aspect of skateboarding but is walking considered a sport? Is masturbating considered a sport?

Art: skill and technique
Sport: an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

There are no rules or customs in skateboarding but there's definitely skill and technique involved. It takes a certain technique to do a kickflip or an ollie, in baseball, you just hit a ball and run like the millions of other people before you. I wouldn't call skateboarding an "Art" because that would make me sound like a lame hipster. If music is just music, acrobatics is just acrobatics and photography is just photography, how about skateboarding is just skateboarding?

playing a video game is different from actually skating the streets. if you don't do that, you won't know about street skating. you will just be  mark that thinks you do.

big deal...he's got plenty of loot and he's making sure he keeps plenty of loot.

i see no issues.

the more people jump stairs, slide perfect handrails, using the same tricks that can be done in your favorite video games, the more linear and sports-like skateboarding gets. the more people skate the same spots does the same thing... because you are creating level playing fields. thats why contests are gay, thats why seein the same spots over and over again on videos is gay, it becomes a footage contest and you hear about all these people like moving up dates on their video project so their spot doesnt get leaked in the magazine before the vid drops. god forbid someone does a kickflip over a gap you just ollied. its pretty fucking lame that is on that kind of competitive shit over something that is really so trivial.

thats why alien workshop and static are the best, east coast spots that eurethane has never made contact with, completely shredded. sometimes i get stoked just seein a nice turn or whatever... makes you want to shred 24/7.

i fucking hate skating with kids who are like "this spot sucks. i see a flaw here." and they damn well know its fully skateable. i dont like skating things that are completely chunked but like a little crack in a ledge totally throws off so many people. its like, then just do a slide trick on this one, give it a try at least. and like they totally have to stop and look at the spot for 5 minutes, unpack all their gear, and then talk about it for a few minutes, then start trying shit. like me, i just roll up to spots, if i see a set of stairs on the way to something it gets ollied or attempted anyway, even if there are cracks for 2 feet in front of the set, its just like fuck it, shred... when you DO make these kind of tricks, usually you have to dodge a person or a car cause you are fucking cruising, but it is 10000000X the feeling of filming any trick i dotn care what anyone says. half the time when i filmed back in the day id get so stressed out tryin shit for hours... like after awhile you dont even think about what you are doing anymore it just becomes so robotic. shredding on the way to your friends house or whatever to me is way better than stopping at some spot and packing a lunch type deal... dont get me wrong, that is dope too! especially to chill and meet your friends. another important part of skating... im just saying that raw street unplanned aspect is so overlooked and almost impossible to document.

a lot of people's videos have no creativitiy anymore its just like go to spot A and use trick 27 in your repitoire, it gets really boring seein jeff lenoce parts for this exact reason.  i would like to just see what its like for a pro to get from their home to a spot, like fuck, goin to the store or pickin up weed halfway through, whatever, slams, all that shit in one take. the real skateboarding that they do, not the hollywood production with generators, lights and bondo and fake spots and websites and hubba girls all that other shit.
