as opposed to mastering the songs individually as we record them?
I'm not sure how the folks who're recording us are doing it ultimately, but this first song has been basically a test run.  we've had 4 different mixes thus far...and I think we've settled on one, but now we might have to rerecord?  I'm not sure.

yeah. the whole point of mastering is to make your record into an even, cohesive whole. and that's a lot easier to achieve if it's all already there to be judged against itself in context. pm me or get at me on the mybookfaces if you wanna talk about recording/mixing/mastering some more.
