i'm in 8th grade

I envy you, kid.

Working out/staying in shape just keeps you feelings good and motivated, not to mention more resilient.  Ever had a day when you were just too bleh and lazy to do shit?  Sleeping ten hours and whatnot...yeah, that doesn't happen often when you work out.  On that note...I gotta get back on the ball.

i dont think working out will do much to your ability skateboarding. taking bails better and maybe being able to pop higher... just go out and skate, thats how you get better. pumpin iron or runnin track isnt gona make it easier to do a hard flip or a laser flip, just go practive them and keep trying.

I disagree.  For some people working out my help joint issues as well as improve skateboarding ability.   I mean the fattest of kids aren't usually successful at skating.....on average.   Don't get me wrong some dudes can skate that are big but in general building muscle...to a point...could only help you in skating.

To ollie you have to get not only you legs in the air but your torso too.    A gut in the way isn't going to help.    Being in shape will help you jump with at least more strenght......agreed the motion is strictly practice....but you still need muscle to do so.

My vantage point is different though.   I've blown all my joints out so the only way to make them even capable of dealing with skating is to build the muscles around them.     And I must say I don't consider "working out" an act of going to a gym.    Simple stuff at home and riding a bike is all it takes really.   At least to balance out my beer and sweets intake.

i agree with Johnny. when you get older, you definitely need some regular exercise/stretching to keep joints moving, and to stay flexible.

i ride a bike sometimes also, but regular skating and a relatively labor intensive job helps out too. hitting the gym is for jocks.

i've also recently discovered that sitting in a car seat for hours on end, stopping at different types of skateparks, also helps to improve your skating. Cheesy

working will ultimately help your endurance out a little more.  really depends on how long you can skate for and what type of skater you are.  if your just into doing board stuff then it might not be too helpoful.  But to ride all day and gaps, you may need to make sure you have little fat on you.

yea i see what you guys mean. working out such as riding a bike or just being active can help ill agree. but im 17 years old, been short and skinny my whole life and very energetic. my joints n stuff go out every once in a while and i get scraped up n stuff but yea, keeping active will help. i guess i was just thinking strictly "WORKING OUT" like exercises and what not. so i guess it would help you in skating in ways.

As a decent meathead/brawler and a mediocre skater who has been doing the former a good deal longer than the latter, I feel inclined to share my experience on working out and skating.

Here are the pros and cons in my opinion:

Pros:
- Security guards are always turbo polite to you.
- At parks BMXers stay away from you and nobody typically snakes your lines (exempt fucking Razors).
- People don't think you are an EMO/Artflamer just becuase you are wearing skate shoes and an Indy shirt.
- It's best to roll onto a large muscle when you biff - more muscle, more padding
- Your tendons are strong - you deal with 1-2 years of chronic pain as these strengthen when you really lift hard for awhile but rarely pull anything skating.
- Frat boys are scared of you.
- Keeps things fresh, you aren't always doing the same shit everyday.
- Health, anything that makes you healthier helps you skate longer and harder.
- Mosh pits are more fun.
- Confidence.

Cons:
- You lose flexibility, even if you strech a lot you feel like a gorilla most of the time.
- Gravity works against you - airing and falling.
- The gym burns up energy so sometimes you have to choose between skating and lifting on a particular day (likely you always want to skate).
- You break more boards than you probably would otherwise.
- You deal with more douche bags at the gym than at parks.
