Yea you guys are right, he isnt justified for trying to make himself look like a saint as he charges Indulgences.  I think he is very bitter and jealous that Rob D has a TV show in a warehouse on the same street as him.

Is that show even about skateboarding? More like a big wank.

Anyone see the new video? Maybe if the first video had been a little more like this, it wouldn't have been such an issue. Just a little honesty goes a long way, something completely lacking in the first one.

I was just about to change my avatar when TW had to open his fucking mouth at the end.

I still don't think he is being completely honest with us. One example I am going to give that probably won't stand out to the little kids that go to the website is the comparison that he gave between paper advertising and online advertising. The two are not the same!! The reason paper advertising cost so much is the man power that goes into printing and delivering the damn phone books, leaflets or whatever you choose to use. Also aren't phone books printed per year not month? So that 6000 dollars actually goes for an entire year in the phone book rather than the per month they stated.

To sum this point up, Steve Berra brings no comparison in terms of the cost to advertise on other websites. Why he does not do this I do not know. Also it is ridiculous for him to say that there is a correlation between skateshop sales and Berrics advertising seeing as how I have seen no data to confirm this and that the Berrics Unified hasn't even been up for a month. Most statisticians require huge populations to even infer these huge claims he makes and even then several years of data!

Long story short, Steve Berra is not giving us the whole truth or he is so full of himself that he believes everything he says is true.

I honestly don't think this is a scam or anything. Perhaps he's wrong in his approach, but I don't think he's trying to make easy money.

In the video, he's right about the costs of running a site like that. I've done web development stuff before and charged ridiculous money for it. I doubt Berra's coding the actual site himself. Chances are, they're paying some asshole like me to do it for them. And assholes like us (the tech-savvy dorks) charge ridiculous amounts of money for this kind of stuff. Why?
  • Because we can.
  • Paid work like this isn't exactly "regular"... not only in terms of how we get the work done, but also in how often these opportunities actually come up.
  • Most of us don't want to get "real" jobs.

That coupled with hosting costs for high-trafficked sites and the fact that it is advertising, $50/month isn't so bad. Again, I just look at it the same way as having an additional cell-phone to do promotions... and if you don't like it, simply don't use it. Most optional things in life are handled just that easily.

wow, geo-targeted ads, how revolutionary!

seriously, any site with a decent ad server (any site w/ steady traffic) can geo-target ads. it is very standard and requires little customization, especially since the berrics doesn't have many pages to tag. i spent years working in online advertising, and i can tell you that shops have many other options. they pay based on the ads served, by way of a CPM (cost per thousand). so a typical cpm is $10, meaning they get their ad displayed on 1000 pages for $10. if skateshops wanted to pay for online advertising, their money would go further with facebook if they were trying to geo-target. facebook also has ways of contextual targeting to make sure they hit skateboarders...and there are many more skateboarders on facebook than the berrics.

i've got a revolutionary new idea for locally marketing your shop... see, what you do is get some skateboards made with your shops name and logo on them, right? then, you give some of those skateboards that have your shops name and logo on them to some guys that are really good at skateboarding. then those guys go ride those skateboards that have your shops name and logo on them. then those dudes that you gave those skateboards that have your shops name and logo on them to can tell kids to go visit your shop.

you could also possibly have your shops name and logo printed on some sort of adhesive-backed vinyl sheeting, and "stick" it places in your area.

nah, what am i thinking? those are stupid ideas and would never work.

Yeah, he keeps droning on about geotargeted ads. Useful in this case, but not some huge deal.

$local = end(file('\http://api.hostip.info/get_html.php?ip=' . $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']));
$state = trim(end(explode(',', $local)));

Pay me!

That could NEVER work! It doesn't involve the interwebs or someone w/ a $50k salary.

Also who in the right mind would overpay coders and IT guys. Right now in "the worst recession ever" they are a dime a dozen since having most of their jobs outsourced to India and China. They were one of the hardest hit next to construction workers so there should be a glut of them in California begging to code for next to nothing. Unless Steve Berra is also going to start a revolution in the IT industry with AK's a poppin!

All I saw was the second video and I kept imagining his head photoshopped on a picture of Jesus pinned on the cross.  On the plus side, it's cool to see them taking a stab at some decent marketing because, as a whole, good marketing is good for skateboarding.  The part that kind of sucked to me was The Berrics has some solid credibility and the whole saviour card being played sounded kind of lame.

On a somewhat related note, I just found out about a locally owned shop about 10 minutes from my house in the shop pages in the back of this month's issue of Lowcard.  It's fairly new but I had no idea it was there.  Good shit.
