haha, having that shit cut out was a sigh of relief... it felt like an ice pick in my nerve. I had it cut out twice on my right toe then it came back again so I had both sides of both big toe nails cut ou(so six times total).  Then the doctor put chopsticks in the base and poured acid into the root so those sides of the nail would never grow back.  Been ~ 3 or so years now and no problems whatsoever.  So glad I did it.

i know your pain. i've got one i have to perform self-surgery on every once in a while. as long as i keep it super short, it's alright, but when it starts digging... boy that shit sucks. gotta dig in there and get it out. sometimes the pain straight up blinds me and knocks me out of my chair. i should look into just having it killed off. was it expensive, or are you one of those lucky people with health care coverage?

I dealt with it just like you, doing the same self surgeries every few months... always in fear about the next time that you HAVE to cut it.  I did this for about 5 years until I couldn't take it anymore and my wife forced me to Kaiser.  I don't know how much it costs (I have medical through work) but it's a very simple and fast procedure.  The doctor numbs the toe with a needle full of Novocain and then just cuts down to the base.  Recovery is about a week or two, wearing open toed shoes and soaking in epson salt.  Plus if you act like a baby like I did they'll give you some painkillers.

I would recommend doing the acid treatment too.... actually if I could go back in time I would do that from the get go.  Not worth the risk of having it ingrow again.

Now I wear shoes that give me at least a half inch of room.  Before I would get shoes that just fit and then they would stretch out once broken in.  BAD IDEA.
