It may feel like that initially (in between your fingers and spinning them on the board) but skating like that will definietly make them slower and damage them in the long run.  All the dust, crust and grime from the streets/ramps will build up in there and slowly damage and corrode.  Just keep the shields on when you skate and take them off once a year to clean/lube them and they should last damn near forever.

They feel faster under my feet without the shields on, but I never care to take them off anymore.

But most certainly never, ever, ever take the shields off to lube them up and clean them. I've just had bad experiences doing that and would much rather either replace slow bearings or buy a new set all together. I believe it attracts more gunk when you do that.

its drys them out and makes them faster and louder, and any shit that gets in can easily get out. You should only take the shields off swiss, any other kind and they will get fucked up....

Damn, lots of bearing n00bs.  Here is the path to bearing success.

1. Buy Bones Swiss Bearings (Ceramics if you can find/afford them)
2. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
3. Ride them and love them.
4. Huh?
5. Profit.

Seriously, its absolutely fine to take out Swiss bearing shields.  You need to be delicate with a sharp razor blade (not a caveman with a fork).  Clean/lube them as instructed once a year and you will be golden.

all bearings have an ABEC rating.  the higher the number doesn't make them faster. it just means that the tolerance specs of the ball finish and bearing race finish are higher. which i guess you could say makes them faster, but it also means that the gunk that gets in there will do more damage to a higher ABEC  bearing. that's why they have sheilds.   all automotive bearings have covers also. why? TO KEEP SHIT OUT OF THEM!

i used to get bearings from the vacuum cleaner shop. same bearing number and they also spin alot faster than a wheel.

No, bones don't submit their bearings to abec for rating.
