Tell us a little bit about growing up skating in Alaska. The winters are really long, cold, and dark. I’d pretty much watch skate videos, go snowboarding, or skate parking garages to keep my sanity. But in the summer it’s light out all day and night, so I’d skate all the time.
At what point did you decide that you wanted to skate for a living? After I started skating I knew that this was something I was really feeling. Skating for a living always sounded good, but never really seemed possible until I quit going to school. In terms of my priorities, I always put skating above school. I felt stuck in the classroom, just getting bad grades. I ultimately made the decision to leave school and pursue something I was passionate about. I figured I would go for it, and at worst, get to skate.
Switch backside 180.
How did you lose your front tooth? On this rail with a kink at the bottom that wrapped around like a loop. I was on a 50-50 and slipped when I hit the kink. My feet got caught in the loop and bang!
Any dangerous encounters with Alaskan wildlife? Nothing dangerous, just lots of Moose.
Why did you choose to come to SF instead of Southern California?
When I was growing up I didn’t hear much about Southern Cali; it was all about SF. I’d rather smash around the city than buy a car and sit in it all day in LA.
Now that you’re pro, and officially in the running for Skater of the Year, what do you think your chances are? One in 25.
