Title: The Mental Block
Post by: dtotherob on January 03, 2012, 03:57:43 PM
ok. i thought i'd start a build thread of sorts for my ramp. it started out as a simple 8' wide qp to pass the time in the winter.  well that idea quickly became a mini ramp. i built another tatching qp and tied them together with the top sheets as there was no framing for a flat bottom. basically it rode right on the garage pad. we diagonal mased it and i put some parking blocks on it for something different.

that's where the name came from. everyone that came over to skate was intimidated by the big block and like we all know, everything in skating comes down to a mental thing, so the name stuck.  "The Mental Block".

i moved about 5 months after the original qp build and due to the ease of dis-assembly, i split the 2 qp's and moved them to my new house, where last month, i joined them back up.

my new garage is 24'x26' so naturally, we must build bigger!!  since it's still built on the pad floor, i decided that i would just start adding to the width, the same way as the original.  i will eventually overlap the plys to give it strength and rigidity, but as it sits now, it's solid as fuck!  my friend Rob and i have done all the work so far.

i'll let the pictures do the talking.

we put in a good solid weekend of work to get it doubled. we also added an extension and decided to bowl the corner.

my new garage has a furnace in it but it wasn't working.  most of my buddies i skate with are all tradesmen so with a little help, we replaced the gas valve and thermocoupler and got the heat working!

oh ya!  here's the infamous mental block.  they are composite. one guy can easily toss a couple into the back of a truck.  i cut one of them in half to make a nice 11' stretch.  they grind awesome.

the long 16' stretch will have regular steel coping and i'm planning on doing a pool style coping for the 4'/bowl section.

i'm searching for some info in the DIY section here, but if anyone has some input for the pool coping, please feel free to contribute.  feedback is also welcome!

RAD! good one Dan.

The last wooden bowl with pool coping I skated the builders predrilled the blocks and screwed them in. They are still there passing the test of time.

They didn't know angles (me neither) so they just went one brick at a time to figure out what angle to cut them at by eye.

did a little more work on it tonite. almost finished up the corner but my drill doesn't fit in the bottom.

damn that looks nice!

and since we lost our path, i built a small ladder to get access to the construction zone lol.

gonna have to wait to put those bottom ribs in on the weekend when Rob brings his compact drill.  we are also going to start on the other corner, but have something else in store for it.

^ oh sick! who's this newb!  tranny slayer Adam is on the boards!

thanks for the comments guys.  i was think about doing them one at a time like you suggested krusher but if i make 4 pieces for the corner, the angles should be the same as what i've used all along.

i'm hoping to pick up the steel coping this weekend.

and krusher is also killing it by putting this thread up on the netwerk blog. stoked!

feels like we've really made some progress.  the corner is finished. we added a few extra braces for support to it and it's not going anywhere.  should have a good top to deck it out.

tonite we attacked the other corner. i told you guys that i've got something else in store for it.  we built a flat bank.

the tall side make for a nice grind into the bank and we also made it so the lower side coping flows right into the flat bank.

still waiting to find out about the steel coping and we are going to make some molds for the rest of the coping.  should be getting on to the sheeting tomorrow.  then i'm gonna have a masonite party where everyone  pitches for a sheet and brings a drill.  then we shred it.

fuck i'm stoked to be updating this on the daily lol! not much longer.

some of the old dogs came over on the weekend to help for a couple hours.   with their help, we got the first layer of sheeting done. well, except for the corner. we also ripped up sheets from the old ramp and overlapped some of them to strengthen it up.

some veteran ramp builders up in here.

get on that! at least you don't have to shelter yourself from a deep freeze.  i would have built outside if it weren't for that.

seems like we've been trying to avoid sheeting the corner.  some marginal way goodies showed up in the mail  so it inspired me to try and cut at least on piece a day for it to make up for lost time.  shit is tough it figure out.  been mostly winging it lol! but for the first layer, i'm pretty happy with it.

(http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f5/dtotherob/54d26364.jpg)thanks bailgun!

we also mounted the cut section of the mental block onto the top of the flat bank.  yes the ceiling is going to be removed and head space made.  the "franken bank" is is gnarly.

here's an idea of the space we used.

thanks again for the comments.  it's getting closer to completion.  .  hopefully picking up some coping saturday and might be able to start on the masonite.  the corner deck still has to be poured.  on to some more pics.

almost have the 2nd ply finished. part of the corner and the lower part of the flat bank need a couple more pieces.

yea i am.  i'm also going to find some scrap carpet to try and deaden the sound.

Title: Re: The Mental Block
Post by: dtotherob on January 29, 2012, 05:29:50 PM
so i didn't get any coping last week but my friend Geoff came in from vancouver for the weekend.  a few guys showed up and we got to work on the corner. the last of the second ply.  we prepped the first layer to ensure a smooth final surface.

and then Geoff started on cardboard templates for the next ply.

a few hours later, we had this.  we even took a few turns rolling through it just to make sure it was rad. it was.

Geoff flew home the next day. bummer cause i could use his awesomeness on the masonite!

throughout the week i thought i'd get the coping situation sorted out.  i ordered some steel pipe and Rob and i got the bowl section formed and prepped for the pour.  big thanks to bailgun and krusher for some of their tips on this.  salamander even offered some pool coping and i would have taken him up on his offer, if i lived in cali. anyways, onto some pics.

the total pour was about 17 feet long, 10 inches down to 5 at the apex of the bowl and it's about 2.5 inches thick.  i used high psi grade concrete and added some portland into the mix.  we mixed it in a tarp and dumped it into the pail for a good mixer stir and then right into the trough.

we also ghetto rigged up some bullnose for the extension at the last minute to use up leftover crete.

saturday we got started with a nice clean up of the junk laying around and then onto the the steel coping. it's about 17 feet total length and we scored 2 10 footers.  the ramp does have a slight lift where the 2 ramps were put together wo we had to cut them at a slight angle to compensate. i would weld them up later.

i know i said no one rides till she's done, but the boys worked hard so i snapped a few pre-mase pics. feeble fakie, 5-0 fakie.

fast forward 2 weeks later.  ramp is finished!!  thursday i put the last piece in and i had an inaugural session with everyone who helped out.  the coping got painted up with a 1 part epoxy paint.  filled the steel coping with foam.  took down the garage door parts.  i found a spot for the mini fridge.  i had a couple buddys come by and graffiti up the wall.  that turned out fucking sick.  anyways, everyone likes pictures so here we go.

bondo.

the noping is actually great.  grinds are fast and it's holding up pretty good considering it's just bondo and paint over the cement.  and i don't care about the distance, i'm coming to salamander ranch lol!

sorry chuck.  i had already left for work, otherwise i would have let you in.

and FYI, chuck and susej are killing it. in case you couldn't figure that out.

Fuckity fuck fuck.  I don't know how I missed this thread.  Nice work!  I like the mix of coping, nice rounded corner and a flat bank tossed in for good measure.  That's one hell of a garage build man.

You had any bean poles show up and put their head through the ceiling yet?

thanks Stabby.  there's the occasional head touch but nothing serious.  many boards into the ceiling though.

a couple updates. i upgraded the lights.  huge improvement. i scored these for free from a guy at work. same dude hooked me up with some carpet, which i lined the underside of the ramp with.

Beautiful, cool idea with the bank in the corner.  Poured in place coping is always a good time.

thanks for the comments guys.

my garage is 24wx26deep. coping to coping is 14 feet.  i have about 8-10x24 left for the chill area and where the other work area is going to be.

it gets destroyed on a regular basis haha! NBD's every session it seems.  we've been at it again a whole bunch since it snowed a couple weeks ago.

my ramp was included in this write up about skating here in the winter.  it's the second one.  first one is my buddy Jared's ramp.  the wonder emporium.  it's super fun.  i met Jared 27 years ago when i was 10.  he was 15 and killed it.  stoked to have hooked up with him again before this came out.  the last ramp is Shane's.  it's awesome and what gave me the inspiration to pour my own coping.  anyway, here's the link to the article.

well it's been over a year since i updated this thread.  it's becoming quite the mancave lol!  getting shredded regularly. my friend put together this little clip of the regulars ripping.  it should give you an idea of the look haha! or you can follow me on instagram, @dtotherob, or follow the ramp @thementalblock. check out hashtag #thementalblock while you're at it.
