Title: Any MMA fans in Thrasher?
Post by: 4count on December 03, 2008, 10:01:00 AM
Guys I represent some of the top fighters in the UFC and WEC and one of them told me to look into this demographic.

Bart Palaszewski is an IFL champion and makes his debut in the WEC tonight. Bart is an avid skater and if he wasn't a professional MMA athlete he would have pursued skating.

Would it be cool to have an athletes in this sport rep Thrasher or other brands in your sport when they are in the cage?

I'd like to hear what you have to say. Thanks for you time.

you can check Bart out at http://www.suckerpunchent.com/events/bartimus-cometh-dec-3rd/ (http://www.suckerpunchent.com/events/bartimus-cometh-dec-3rd/)

maybe i am wrong, but i always saw fighting for sport as something more geared toward the redneck/retard demographic. i could never get into people competitively beating each other up. than again, i hate watching footage of skateboarders getting hurt (hence not being able to get through 5 minutes of that show scarred).

i do know one skateboarder that go into mixed martial arts. the kid that got me into skating actually. but i think he hardly skates anymore and definitely has become more redneckish.

how exactly would he rep thrasher? by doing what (i mean)?

Doesn't RVCA sponsor fighters and skateboarders?

I like watching UFC, it's great beer drinking entertainment.  There's a few dudes that I met through friends that fight in San Jose who are cool as fuck.  One's a professional tattoo artist in SF.

I can understand mixed martial feelings about it though.  The WWE champ has a RFTC tattoo and that makes me feel very weird.

Repping thrasher was just a hypothetical... We have had our athletes represent brands such as COD4, Paramount pictures and Sinister... We have been seeing a lot of fans wearing stuff from Element and Volcom and since Bart is a skater he had mentioned for us to look into it... so that is what this is...

MMA is definitely not a "redneck sport"... it has strong roots in Japan, Europe and is the fastest growing televised sport in the US right now. It does have a stigmatism to it because of "back yard" brawlers and stuff but I assure you these guys are very high level athletes. When we were in LA for the premier of Cloverfield, Rob Dyrdek stopped for a pic with our client Jens Pulver so he is a big fan of MMA if that says anything??

MMA has many similarities with skating as far as how it got started... underground routes, people thinking its just for punks, overall acceptance of the sport, etc...

Yes, RVCA sponsors many fighters including BJ Penn who is in no way a redneck...

I appreciate any responses guys.

I say to go for it.  RVCA'a been mentioned, and Osiris sponsored Rampage already.  I don't think Thrasher would pay for advertising per se, but many other clothing and shoe companies would I bet.

Advertising is advertising folks.  Don't hate the player, hate the game.

MMA is tight. I've always wanted to try it but skating is my poison.

yeh like i said thrasher was just a hypothetical one and would necessarily look for cash from them.

I do think there is synergy with this sport and ours so we'll see if we can make any play happen. maybe if we can get a buzz going the skate world might recognize some of our boy ;)

Im going to instruct Bart to check out this forum... keep an eye out for him! Hopefully he will be victorious tonight.

The Miguel Angel Torres fight tonight will blow away any of the PPV fights in the last 6 months.

cross-marketing flat-out sucks.
disagree with me and you're wrong.

so if an athlete that excels in two sports he should not cross market? ever here of Bo Jackson?

MMA revolves around competition.  It's all about who's better than who.  Don't encourage skateboarding to follow that trend more than it already has.  Some of us choose to skate so that we can avoid that mentality all together.

that is your problem...skateboarding isn't a sport.
skateboarding is skateboarding.

elastic and bailgun i respect your opinions. Wasn't that long ago that skaters faced the same type of stigmatism you guys seem to be giving MMA. I speak from a bit of experience as I was a skater in my youth but that was a long time ago.. haha. back in the day of Christian Hasoi, bones brigade, etc... anyway I think if you did a little research on MMA you would find that there is a high level of respect and sportsmanship with the people involved... After all its roots are in Martial Arts.

hosoi and all of the bones brigade are all still skating (not sure if tommy guerrero is though). hosoi had thrashers last cover actually. how come you aren't?

i don't doubt that there is respect and sportsmanship between people in mma, but at the end of the day they are still hurting each other for others' pleasure. kinda primitive to me. people look down on the romans for that. what is the difference? other than the dying thing...

I"m with Bowser on this...I can hang out at a buddy's pad and drink beer on a snowy night
and watch 3 hours of all out brawling, and I can definitely see some dudes coming out
sporting RVCA or Volcom gear......but I'm just curious as to what they can wear/act like,
before my popser alarm goes off and I stand up and go "that guy doesn't skate, WTF!"
But anyhow, I don't really see anything wrong with it...gotta pay the bills

bo jackson never wore his baseball glove while playing football.

plus...
that is your problem...skateboarding isn't a sport.
skateboarding is skateboarding.

and
stigmatism
that isn't a real word, dude.

You know I just saw this documentary on Hasoi the other week and saw that.... was really cool. I actually had a chance to skate around with him for an afternoon when I lived in Spain... around 87-88? i believe... He was really cool but i thought it was strange how he actually just hung with us at the skate park and around Madrid... then i saw the documentary and it all kinda came together. You know I wish I did still skate it was some of the best times of my life. I rode freestyle bikes too... mostly halfpipe and quarter pipes we built in peoples backyards. Im 37 now and have kids if that answers your question... but i can still do some basic stuff and it gets a kick out of all the young kids in the neighborhood. I actually still have my Haro Master still hangin in the garage...lol.

Listen fellas I appreciate all the feed back even the bad ones... can't win them all but i can promise you if you met any of the guys in our stable you would see right away that they are class acts;)
and for bailgun... touche' but you knew what i meant. you seem angry bro you should try a jujitsu class or something to let out that aggression ;D

Chris Leiben was a shredder, too. I can see the parallels between fighting and skating, maybe not fighting as a sport. What I'm trying to say is that in my home town we got into tons of fights with the fuckin' gangsters and the jocks and even the goth fucks all the time. I can see a skateboarder becoming a fighter, i mean we do have a high tolerance for pain.
If they want to make a living kicking the shit out of each other then more power to 'em. I'm sure a ton of people feel the same way about skateboarding.
I think MMA is kickass.

Pretty much.

- Skateboarding has it's fair share of jocks too (Sheckler, Andy Mac, etc.).

- I don't think MMA is that heavy on the competition side, it's more like trying to push yourself.  Kinda-sorta like skating.

- Sure winning the belt or Triple Crown is nice, but it's not the entire reason you're there.

- It's a helluvalot better than WWF fake bullshit.

i've got no beef with MMA, i just don't like it when anything that isn't skateboarding tries to somehow tie itself to skateboarding.

depending on your viewpoint, i guess that either makes me an elitist or a purist.

This guy was just suspended for taking steroids for a fight in which he still lost.

good stuff fellas I think everyone has valid points... We thought we saw a potential to expand awareness of skate brands and fight mma brands to a broader market because of certain similarities in the demographic and this forum has served as a nice little focus group for us to see if there is anything worth pursuing.... I still think there is... By the way if anyone is intersted our bot Bart Palaszewski won his debut in the WEC on wednesday via KO in the 2nd round. He also was awarded the KO of the night award. Bart is the fighter/skater that asked us to check out this demo.

here is the link. http://www.suckerpunchent.com/fighter-news/bartimus-wins-by-ko-in-wec-debut/ (http://www.suckerpunchent.com/fighter-news/bartimus-wins-by-ko-in-wec-debut/)

By the way Bart is one of the funniest/ nicest guys in the biz...

Actually here is another link that describes his run in with some skater kids in San Fransisco on the famous lumbard street. http://www.suckerpunchent.com/blindside/the-suckerpunch-blindside-2/ (http://www.suckerpunchent.com/blindside/the-suckerpunch-blindside-2/)

Being a purist is fine... I feel the same way about backyard fighters who claim to be MMA fighters... hate it and they give us a bad name. I was never trying to tie anything to skateboarding bro... just trying to see if your audience had similar interests because one of our high level athletes suggested we look into it... and he happens to be very passionate about skating... Skateboarding is considered an "extreme sport" and so is MMA, just testing the waters and it seems that there are some fans of MMA in skating, just as there are fans of skating in MMA. Heck i see your brands all over the place when we are at a UFC event...

My old roommates were into this shit, always watched The Ultimate Fighter and that kind of shit...it's okay, if there's nothing else on and there's a special on, say, "THE GREATEST KO'S OF ALL TIME" I might watch...otherwise it's kind of boring.
