yes he is.
and if you can beat him at snooker, he'll do your record for free.

and he wrote this...

it's probably tl;dr fo a lot of you, but if you're in a band and you don't read it, you're fucking yourself in the ass.

oh, and if you haven't checked out steve's bands, you're probably a douchebag moron retard.

Someone answer me this:

What the fuck is a "point" as far as music production is concerned?

Most definitely!

VBS did a really good 4 part interview with him last year, in their Soft Focus show. He talks about the record industry and business in general. I sometimes worried that he might be a pretentious dick (after witnessing him yell at people moving around too much at a Fugazi show, and his sometimes "holier than though" ramblings) but I got to meet him once when he toured with The Evens and he is super nice, approachable and humble.  He even gladly let a random fan play his guitar after the show. That night made me respect him even more. MacKaye rips!

When someone says 3 points, the producer is getting 3 percent of total sales...(!)?

yep. and here's the really nice part-everyone but the band gets paid from the get-go. they have to "recoup" the expenses of making and promoting the record. and usually lables will force bands to spend WAYYYY more time and money than is necessary to make the record. recording budgets are often over $100,000  and most bands get 10 or less points after recoupment, and must recoup out of their points. it's not uncommon for bands to sell 100,000 records and still be broke.

gotta love the rock and roll business.
