FRONTSIDE FIVE

Words & photos: Jake Japanese

A few weeks ago, I flew out to Denver to hop in the van with Frontside Five. I rode with them for about two weeks, all the way to Robstock in Machias, Maine. Right off the plane I knew it was going to be a fun Trip, because I was welcomed into the car by Shane offering me a joint and talk about going to skate some Jersey divider up the street from his place. That was only the beginning. We spent the next couple of weeks skating, rocking, swimming, drinking, eating mushrooms, laughing, and doing everything else that should be done on a fun summer tour. There was a lot of hardcore hanging out. I have so many stories I could write a book.

Since you have spent some time in jail do you feel like you can relate to Jay Adams?

Sure, I guess...

Now that you are on home detention do you feel like you can relate to Jamie Hustle?

Yes, we have a lot in common.

Frontside Five have spent a lot of time on the road. Can you tell me about a game or two that you play to help pass the time?
The game Waffle house is a good one. If you see the Waffle House exit sign it's one punch. If you see the actual restaurant it’s two punches. We all have bruises when on tour in the South.

What is the name of your van and where did the name come from?
Maroon, when I bought the van from the used car dealership that's what was written on the key-chain.

Is Brooke the only member of your band who has mistakenly drank out of a pee bottle in the van?

I'm not sure... I've seen Rob do it on purpose a few times.

I heard her tell the story a few times over the summer. Do you think she is proud that she drank it?
Yes.

How many bottles of hot sauce do you take on the road? Do you each have a favorite?

About 12 or so… They’re all pretty good.

What is a Swan?
If your reading this you are a swan.

What is so great about Denver? What keeps you guys there?
Good people, good skating, and a good music scene.

Do you think anyone cares what Frontside Five have to say?
No.

Frontside Five are the most positive group of people I have ever traveled with. This really shines through when you see them live. They enjoy and appreciate every second that they're playing. It is truly what they love doing, and they are really good at it. Their music is everything you’d want from a skate rock band. It’s fast, driving, fun punk rock, with some heavy breakdowns. Make sure you go see them when they come through your town. They are down, so show 'em your spots. Until then, go check out their music and other bands they put out on their Fivecore label. Thanks guys, for letting me be “Jake in the van.”
